The topic this month is, 'outdoor flash photography'.

The images can be of any subject but must be taken outdoors and show a high level of technical skill and/ or creativity in the use of flash photography.

Rules:

The photos taken must be your own work and can be taken at anytime, but please do get out with your gear if you have safe opportunity etc.

The competition will run from the first to the last day of the month.

You can only submit one, and only one photo.

The winner from the previous month decides on the topic for the following month and judges it at the end of the month.

Entries and discussion on this single thread please.

All entrants acknowledge that they may indeed win and that their adherence to convention ensures everyone else's continued fun.

Photos entered can be as large as you like, although bear in mind if too large, it may not be possible to see the whole image on some screens. Links to larger versions are permissible

Oh go on then - I'll start....

In 2017, Jackie Chan racing entered a couple of cars into LMP2 with very unusual graphics. We didn't get to the circuit until late on Thursday, so the first we saw of the car was during the race. Only later that evening, as the sun went down, did it become apparent that the graphics were reflective.

At about 10pm, we cycled to Indianapolis to try our hand at capturing some glowing discs.

Sadly, the spectator banking is set well back from the circuit, but the flash still managed to pick out the reflective graphics. Pretty grainy (even after PP), but I still like it.

'The Ghost Bird'

Not often I use a Speedlight at full blast. It was a star-lit night, and I was standing outside trying to photograph bats zooming about... focus set just short of infinity, ISO to 'lots', flashgun to Manual 1/1, aperture to medium to help get it sharp... After a few mediocre shots of bats I suddenly noticed some stars winking out. Something big and slow was coming across but I couldn't see it. No point looking through the viewfinder - just widen the focal length to make sure I'd get it in, point the camera and fire. I had no idea what it was until the flash picked it out.

This nocturnal 'Genet' was photographed in a local forest (South West France) at 03.29am on the 2nd January this year. - Equipment used was Nikon D7000 with 18-55 kit lens, combined with two Nikon SB-28 flashes and 'Camtraptions' triggers for camera and flashes. All gear was 'waterproofed' in home made housings.

Settings used were: 18mm, f8, 1/160th, ISO-400 - Flash settings at Manual 1/8 and left in 'standy' mode.

'Trail-cams' were initially used to 'scout-out' the area, prior to setting up the DSLR system, pre-focused on the fallen tree trunk that was known to be used as a 'run through' for the Genet.

One from quite a while ago (2010).

A friend's son outside celebrating Diwali with a sparkler.

Camera set to manual, f11, 40mm, ISO 800, and shutter set to 1/5 sec to catch the sparkler trail. Flash was hotshoe mounted with a diffuser.

Well done to everybody who entered, some great entries, any of which could have made the top 3

My personal favourite is:

1st - I have tried to photograph the very same subject but with nowhere near this level of success, I love the colour and action (assume some form of 2nd curtain sync? any technical details would be greatly appreciated)

2nd - My second favourite is this excellent wildlife shot, its great to hear the lengths you went to to capture this.

Thanks Itsallicanafford - there were some nice photos there. I liked the glowing disc brake shots. It was basically a point n pan with the flash - exif data:
Make Canon
Model Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Aperture 7.1
Exposure Time 1/8 (0.125 sec)
Focal Length 28.0 mm
Flash On, Fired

I will start a new thread for July - good luck chaps and chapesses.
