After initially discounting the Nikon stuff due to the D50 needing SD cards, I found out the D70 has CF. Glad, because I just bought two 1GB Sandisk Ultra-IIs.

But the question is, where to buy one?

I want a 300mm lens (suggestions?), polarising filter.

Is it still possible to get the original D70 ? Or is it all D70s now?

Anyone out there doing deals? Or are they so popular nobody is discounting?

There are still D70 out there - I was in Jessops in Ipswich yesterday & they had them on display.

I used Jessops for mine & they price matched a web deal (£694 inc the 18-70 lens) and there was then the Nikon cashback promo running, so I got a cheque for £100 back...

I then registered with the Nikon site & downloaded the D70s firmware upgrade & Robert is your Mother's brother

Hope that helps

Well done John, I don't know why the D50 takes SD either!

300mm zoom or prime?

Unless you're really fussy about quality I'd get the filter from eBay - saves a fortune. Circular polarising is what you need, and suggest a UV filter for protection too.

300mm zoom lens - looks like Nikon are bundling a 70-300 G lens which I will try to pick up as well.

I went into Jessops hunting down one of the last D70 models and sod's law was that their stock list and what they had didn't match. Have found another however and will pick it up in the AM.

Looks like the £100 rebate has ended though - so all in I save £70 between the D70 and D70s.. but the D70s has a slightly better battery .. decisions, decisions..

OK, but if you're talking bundles make sure you get the 18-70mm and not the 28-80.

EN-EL3? Same as D70; maybe the 's' uses less current? Anyway, don't fret, battery life is excellent anyway. The larger screen of the 's' might be handy but there are many other things to juggle.

Don't get excited, it doesn't make your camera any better, it's basically bug fixes. Plus you need Nikon Capture 4.1+ (I think) to get them into the box. I looked at the upgrades and thought 'Nah!'

Improved performance for the 5-area autofocus system's Dynamic Area AF and Closest Subject Priority Dynamic Area AF modes.

Updated menus with a new design similar to that of the D70s, making them easier to view and quicker to recognize.

Added in-camera page setup support for PictBridge compatible printers.

Incidentally, what size polarising/UV filter do I need?

Ah, your thinking about the curve John. You dont need Capture to load the firmware, just the USB Data lead.

The firmware can be found here. Be sure to read all the HOw To section and make sure your battery is fully charged

67mm. It used to give helpful stuff like that on the lens, but they don't anymore...

Jessops and Nikon are now a little bit richer

I got the D70 with 18-70 lens plus a 70-300 G lens and polarising/UV filter to fit the 18-70 (the 70-300 is 65mm dia, annoyingly)

My only regret is that I don't think I'll be able to use my semi-fisheye converter any more, which allowed some interesting shots in the past.

[viz top tip]Ive just puchased a filter thread adaptor that reduces my larger filter sizes to fit my smaller lenses, It only cost a couple of quid and saves duplication of the less often used or more expensive filters.[/viz top tip]

My fisheye "lens attachment" is Series VII, which I gather is approx. 55mm, if I purchase a step-down ring am I going to be able to use it at all or will the clipping make it unusable?

You guessed right You can try it out by holding it (carefully) in front of the lens and seeing what you get, but don't let it touch the front element.

Now RTM and enjoy your new toy
