Is there a proper working vertical grip yet for the D70 yet, or still just the one with a shutter release button but no primary and secondary controls? Any links and comments for this welcomed. I assume theres no chance the D100 vertical grip add on would fit the D70.

Having to use the IR port wipes out the semi-depressed shutter release stage, which I use a great deal. It also makes operation much more fiddly, so the grip is a non-starter for me. I see it works 'normally' if you have an extra socket fitted to the camera, but of course you can kiss the warranty goodbye.

As grips go the Harbortronics one look pretty darn ugly too! The Hoodman grip looks much nicer and has a more integrated design, especially re the batteries, but has the same IR problem.

The D100 grip won't work; even if it fits physically, the D70 doesn't have any contacts at the top of the battery compartment. Helpful design, not!

The HKJenis site is down and I don't know anyone who's ever had a reply from them.

Having now looked into them a little more it seems all these vertical grips only really offer a shutter release button, and that with a time lag. Seems this is not something to do with a D70. Will have to wait a few years for that feature on the next camera.

You're right, the D70 grip is very much an aftermarket compromise. The camera simply isn't designed for one. Mind you, people have been known to make ones out of wood, purely for that 'pro' look!

It's a nuisance but I suppose Nikon wanted to keep it clear from the multi-K models.
