My attempt, old school K1000
Discussion
Go easy, this is my genuine first attempt with a ‘proper’ camera, a K1000 to be precise. I’m looking to buy a digi SLR, I do freelance journo work, the photography I have done has only been for Owners clubs so 1mb images have always been satisfactory but more recently I’ve been getting work from bigger main stream magazines, so if I use a freelance snapper thats half my profit eaten and the Canon Powershot I currently use simply isn’t good enough! I have been researching and the outcome seems to be the D50, good choice? It needs to be an all rounder, stills, close ups and high speed shots.
Anyway here goes…
They are a lot crisper on paper, remember they have been scanned in and shrunk…

Sorry but... time for eBay. Or keep it to stop your books falling over

Any DSLR will be light years ahead of what you're used to. Go for a D70 if you can find one; IIRC it does 1/8000th sec as opposed to the D50's 1/4000th sec. Aspects like close-up are done by the lens, not the camera body, so you can get those later as you want to. High speed work will test you but it's perfectly possible once you've figured out the setting to use.
If you're happy with operating the Powershot then I suggest you stick with Canon. A 350D or a secondhand 300D might be a good option. There's a Canon Outlet on eBay where you can pick up some good deals.
Will you ever need to use a lens wider than 28mm or longer than 200mm, or even 135mm ? Do you feel happy with changing lenses and making sure dust get on to the sensor, or cleaning it off afterwards ? Do you specifically need to take shots at high ISO with low noise ? If not then some of the Prosumer camers such as the Canon Pro-1, Olympus C8080 or the upcoming Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 might suit you better.
