Been looking for ages for the "add border" tool in PS6. I just want to be able to add the 3mm black or coloured frame that you lot use when posting a pic.

Also, which host thing is best. I did use fotango but the pics were tiny on here. Now I use tinypic but you can not retrace your images with them.

Thanks.

I would love to know that as well

Also stangely enough I have a very similar question to Mr Noble. Is there a piece of software out there that you can design the border size and the photo size within?
Currently using Canon software and it only lets you set print size on set paper sizes. No border size ?

Greg, I use Pbase.com and find it very easy to use. For a small fee you can get lots of web space.

eg. www.pbase.com/shadytree

I use photobucket.com

As regards a border I use PS6 I do it by going to canvas size and ticking the 'relative' box and putting in the thickness you want and the colour you want it

Put an ad in the paper, "room for rent". Should get you a boarder quite quickly...

sorry...

Go to "Image->Canvas size" increase the size by either a percentage or by some pixels, and then center the image horizontally and vertically. Choose the colour, and you have a border.

Doh! Beaten to it.

Madamoiselle Fish, could you please go through that again. I have ps6 and if I go to image/canvas size, there is nothing to tick or select, just the anchor boxes at the bottom and the width and height feilds.

Can you help?

Use the rectangular 'select' to drag a border where you require it (make sure 'Feather' is on 0px).

Click on Edit, then Stroke. Enter the width of the border, pick the colour and select the positioning of it - Inside (the selection), Outside or Centre.

If you're adding a border to the very outside of an image, use Inside.

To increase the overall size of the image by adding a big border, use the crop tool. Select the whole image with it and then pres ALT (or option/ctrl on the mac) and drag a corner outwards. Click ok and it will increase the size of the image to your new dragged size and fill with the current background colour.

HELP !!

I need to print a picture 5"x5", but with a surrounding border of 9"x9".

ie. a 5"x5" square with a 4" border all the way round.

My printer can print A3, but I can't design borders, using the Canon software. Can I do this in PS CS ?

yes, and i think PS will even let you do the canvas size thing in inches if you need to.

You are better off doing the maths, and figuring 9 as a percentage of 5 and increasing the canvas size by that. 180% i think?

Thanks guys, have got the crop method sorted. I think I need to have selected the fill colour first as I don't seem to be able to change the boarder colour first.

Strange that there is no proper boarder tool.

PS lessons for me then!!

When you select the crop tool, you can resize it by dragging the edges. I just want, say a 5cmx5cm box fixed? Then move the box to the place you want to crop.

Shadytree: When you select the crop tool, just under the menu (File Edit etc) you'll see boxes for width and height.

To first get the picture to 5in x 5in just type "5 in" in each box (remember the "in" or "cm" or "mm" etc). Then, crop your picture (the box is constrained to that ratio).

Then use the canvass size, set it to "Absolute" and change it to 9" x 9" with the background as the colour you want.

Remember that it doesn't matter what size the picture is on your PC - the concept of inches on a computer doesn't really apply.

Just make sure it's square and that should be all you need to worry about. It's when you get it printed you need to specify 9"x9".

Quick tip for printing photos exactly the size and place you want...

Open a new Word document.

Insert > Text box

Double-click on the edge of the box that appears

Click the 'size' tab and set height and width as required.

Note that the size will include a default margin - to change this click the 'text box' tab and adjust as required.

When you've go the box the size you want, drag it to wherever you want it on the page.

To insert the picture, click inside the box and select Insert > Picture > From file. Then browse to where the picture is and click OK. The picture will automatically size to the box.

If you're not happy with the result, you can drag the size of the text box (and the picture - note they are two different things) as requires.
