It was day one of the Renault Weekend at Donington today so I thought I would pop up and try out my recently acquired Canon FD 2x extender on the 80-200 zoom and see how the newly acquired Canon F1 felt in field operation along with the Vivitar Series One zoom that came with it.

Woke early fearing for the weather and, sure enough, low cloud vey dull. So, having only one ISO 800 film in the bag I went in search of more.

Didn't find any so I was stuck with 400 - which meant the extender was out of the question. In fact for most of the afternoon I was grateful ( I think, the proof will be in the processing) that the Vivitar is somewhere around f2.8 to F4.5 wide open, depending on which end of the zoom one is at.

Seems that Kodak are almost dead and gone and few high street retailers have much stock of anything film like anyway. Oh well, I will need to seek out the more specialised Konica and Fuji vendors then.

So in between the last qualifying session and the first race of the weekend the Renault F1 team were on hand to do some wet demo laps in last year's Monaco GP winning car - Rene Arnoux driving.

Out of the pits he came splashing through the standing water, I got a shot off as he came off Schwantz curve and watched as he headed up towards Coppice and disappeared from view with some nice throttle control - at which point the sound stopped moving, blipped a few times and then shut off. Oops.

Oh well, half a lap better than no lap at all - it was very wet.

In the end I could not resist walking up there and taking a digital snapshot.

Despite the rain (or maybe because of it) it was quite a good afternoon - plenty of activity, some of it intentional, though mostly people having their own accidents.

The Eurocup Megane Trophy cars are rather nice - the body work and presumably the aero requirements finally make that shaking ass look like it has a purpose. Not sure what though. About half of them investigated the gravel on the outside of Coppice whilst I was watching from there.

More of the same tomorrow probably. Hope my waterproof walking boots have dried out by the morning ...
