Well at least the owner of one. There seemed to be mixed views on what to get so I just went for the Canon as I've already got a powershot which is very well made.
Thanks for all the advice. I'll post some pics up when I get to grips with it...
Cheers
As long as your happy with it thats all that matters.

Cool.
But tell me you at least **held** a D70 - I had trouble making up my mind until I actually held one. Totally different kettle of fish from the Canons IMO, which just felt a bit weedy, for lack of a better word. Only referring to the Rebels by the way - I'd swap for a 20D right know if I wasn't neck deep in Nikon glass.
In any case, it is a capable camera and I hope you get along well with it.
(Still not too late though!

You're right of course - I much prefer holding a block of concrete to a camera with a precision feel. ;-) Seriously though, doesn't anyone feel the Nikon is just a little big and bulky?

jesus, don't pick up any other canon or nikon then if you think the D70 is bulky.
A 1ds, 2dx d100, or even a d20 will seem enormous!

!!!
It's a tiddler really, especially as the left hand side has been mostly shaved off. Let's face it, 'real' cameras are big, black and heavy with lots of knobs and buttons.
I saw a 350D in Comet yesterday and had to look twice at the badge to make sure because it looked like one of those Fuji Finepix-nice-but-not-an-SLR-and-only half-the-size cameras.
Anyway, main is thing we're lucky enough to be able to get what we want (well not quite, I can't justify a D2X yet).

I personally don't want anything too small, but I always had a little craving for a Minox somedays!
Bailey used to comment in the Olympus ads that you could put a body in one pocket and a lens in another and not spoil the lines of your suit!
There's a difference of purpose here.
A compact is bought because it's small and cute and fits in a shirt pocket - for when taking photos is secondary to what else you're doing.
An SLR is bought because of its functionality. It's for when taking photos is your primary purpose and you don't want compromises.
Owzat?

Not out.
Where in the spec of an SLR does it require that it be big and heavy? I've got a fine old Pentax and it fits very nicely in my hand, can be used one handed (obviously not with a huge lens) and does a great job. DSLRs have got huge because they have enormous battery requirements and need space to fit memory slots, USB and other connectors, two LCDs, buttons to perform image management and a whole host of other little widgets that are not related to actually taking a photo. If I were only using my camera for portraits, that would be fine - it could get as huge as it wants to. However, I'm not so smaller is better. I'll agree that the 350D hand grip is on the limit of acceptability (and could be more difficult if you have fat hands), but the rest of the camera works really well - no compromise on functionality, apart from vertical controls for portraiture (which you get with the battery grip).
I used the 350D for a wedding a week or so ago - small 50mm prime for walkabout candids, and battery grip and bigger zoom for the rest. It was a great combination.
406 said:Pah! The D1x is 1.2kg without a lens on (according to Steves-Digicams) and 2kgs with a 28-200 and battery
Tuna said:The D70 is not heavy, it weighs very little only 1.15 kg with the kit lens. Now if you want heavy - 2.6 kg - try a D100 with an 80-400 VR on and an MB-D100

So buying a D70 is all about being a camera snob then?
That's a new one! I chose the D70 because I already had Nikon lenses and liked the layout/ergonomics. It was also THE camera to get at the time: I had to wait two months for mine, and that's with trade contacts. Plus, Canons have always been the cameras that 'other' people own (AE1, A1 etc), so I like to jump the other way.
Furthermore, people pay me money to take photos so I'd be daft to turn up with some mickey mouse thing round my neck. In this repect the D70 is only just big enough; if they look questioning I strap on the 70-200 f2.8 and beat them about the head with it.
Call it marketing. Perceived value and all that. If there was a grip for the D70 I'd get that for the 'wow what a big camera' factor. It works

Strange... I felt the Canon was a bit flimsy and insubstantial
