I used to have a copy of Photoshop, now long gone and so, for the last few days have moved on to using GIMP.

All the techniques are pratically the same, layers, feathering, transparency etc.

But one thing I'm missing is using the selection mask from Photoshop. At least I thinks that's what it was called. It's the bit where you painted/filled/drew over your image (in a kind of red colour), but you were painting the selection area, not the actual image.

Does anyone know how to do it in GIMP?

cheers

ETA, finally found it, quick mask:

Must say, beats me why anyone would pay for Photoshop now GIMP is here - stunning bit of software.

Sheesh, the one photo editing question I can answer and you answer it yourself.

Anyway, the official Gimp tutorials are very good -

Using the magic wand tool in GIMP:
when you select an area with the magic wand tool, you can click & drag in an area of the picture to change the threshold on-the-fly and preview the area that will be selected

You'd never of thought you could get away with a thread title with 'gimp' and 'masks' in it would you (outside the Pie and Piston anyway).
