I'm after a flash - it's getting darker earlier and that's my way of justifying spending yet more money.

Is the SB800 worth the premium over the SB600?

And can either be manually fired - eg held in my hand and fired when I want, irrespective of what the camera is doing?

IIRC the main advantage of the SB800 is that it can work with multiple flashguns.

Pretty much every flash has a 'test' button which will fire it manually, but this is likely to be full power. To fire them at lesser powers I think you'd need to trigger them properly, either electronically via hotshoe or optically from another flash.

The SB800/Nikon CLS can get very complex and it's not an area I've fully explored - if you need more info, try the Speedlight forum at www.nikonians.com

I have both and use the SB800 to trigger the 600. Mind you, my son - football_taxi has the 600 on loan
