Your car photos required!
Discussion
Hi all.
I've written a 3-volume book on Grand Touring cars, set to be published early next year (with any luck). All the copy is written, but I need photos!
Neither I nor the publishing company can afford a load of copyrighted images, but I reckon there's enough amateur photography talent on PH to illustrate most of my books.
So, if you want to see your car pictures in print and have any from the list below, email them to me.
A few important points first -
-Images need to be of acceptable quality and high definition (minimum 300dpi and in a flexible format - tiff, eps or uncompressed jpeg).
-They must be your own images. You don't have to own the car, but you do have to be the one who took the photo or else, if someone else recognises their picture and is legally-minded you and I could end up in the dock.
-All sorts of photos are welcome - exterior, interior, engine, detail - but they must be clearly visible.
-Sorry, you won't be paid copyright royalties. However, if I choose to use your photos you will be rewarded with your work in print and you will be credited along with the caption.

I've got a 1985 Lotus Excel if you want me to take some pictures of it. (see profile)
May also have some of my old Puma, but they are on film.
Might also get you Conti GT & Azure if the boss is in agreement.

Sorry, you won't get a free copy of the book. We're working to a rather tight budget (which is why I'm calling on you guys rather than getting copyrighted/corporate images - Photography budget = zero).
However, what's PLR?
Hi twincam
I will hopefully be getting some pictures of an Aston DB7 Zagato within the next few weeks as I need them for an AS level project. Not sure of exact date though.
I will be able to get some of a BMW 6 series (convertible ok?) and I'm not sure if I missed it on the list, but a Jag E type (Series 1, 3.8) might also be an option that I can photograph?
If you want any of these, I can email you to tell you when I should be getting the photos. I'll also have a flick through the car pictures I have atm to see if any fit the bill!
When do you need photos by?

You mean Public Lending Right? That's paid on books, not images, so no I doubt if you will get PLR...
And it doesn't 'cost nothing'. It's an author's right - if the author chooses to pass that right to someone else he loses potential income.

Then the line someone forgot in their sums was 'Photography: £xxx'. The least they/you can do is give contributors a free copy as a thankyou and gesture of goodwill. I got a complimentary copy of Roger Shackleton's book - maybe he costs his projects better?
Sorry if this sounds harsh but it seems a bit of a one-way thing to me, and it's not even a 'favour' as you'll be making money out of it - I presume?

John
Have you ever heard of someone writting a book for free, especially a 3 vol one. Sure he and the publishers are going to make money out of it so why not give a free copy to the contributers. I also notice there is no mention of a copyright waver. Someone wants all the sugar for themselves. If it was me, I would give this a miss.
IMHO of course

(without which the book wouldn't sell?) then he can
split the PLR with the photographer.
I have entered into arrangements like this,
I have been given several free copies of the books,
expenses and/or I receive a small amount each year for the notional loans from national libraries; the PLR.
If I need a favour, I ask nicely and I see if there
is something real I can offer in return.

Well, it might be a considered gamble, in that they need to sell 873 to break even, after which they make a profit. Or maybe there's already £xxxx in the kitty but somebody forgot about the photos OR just thought they could blag them. I'm all for getting photos in print but I do expect at least a freebie in return. Once the presses are set up, which they will have to be anyway, it costs very little to keep your finger on the button for a few seconds and crack off another book.
Twincam, probably time to explain the setup ole bean
