I saw this in an old wooden door. It reminded me of Oriental pictures, thought I'd try to add in some atmosphere with a cloud/fog layer or two but it looks very fake. Anyone got any ideas on how to improve it ?

I think I can almost see what you are getting at but don't think it works. How about rotating to portrait and then using PS to alter the green colour to either purple/blue or orange. This way it might look more like sunrise with reflection on water.

I can see what you are trying to do. Its a clever idea. There was a series of childrens books called 'Nuns on Penguin Island' (I kid you not) with this sort of style.

If you still have access to the subject why not re-take the photo with some actual smoke rather than rely on electrickery?

Thanks guys, yep, I was afraid of that. It's frustrating when you can see a potentially good image somewhere but can't make the best of it. I think that I'll have to wait for a clear sunset in late October to go back and take the picture so that it brings out the texture in the wood a bit more.

You can tell I wan't happy with the "clouds". I still think it should have something like that in it, I might have to try something a bit more graphic to see if that works. Mind you, by Guy Fawkes night there should be plenty of smoke about to capture !

Looking at it again I just realised what it was that didn't make the landscape bit work. The 'sun' is in front of the 'mountain'.

I still like it though just as an abstract thing (but would lose the smoke).
