I know this camera hasnt been officially released for sale yet, but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on this camera, and the E-300. Is it a true dSLR? or is it just a high end pro-sumer compact in fancy clothes? After having a fair few problems with the 2 Canon 350D's, and sending them both back, id still like all the functionality of a dSLR (almost instant focus, and next to no shutter lag etc) but without all the issues i had with the 350D - inaccurate focus, washed out colours etc.

The spec of the E-500 certainly seems attractive, although im holding out until they arrive, so i can try one for myself.

heres the early review ive found - www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/e500.html

Any thoughts very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Oliver

'The versatility of the Olympus E-System comes from delivering the largest selection of “Designed-for-Digital” lenses –more than any other manufacturer to date.

OK, you can change lenses, good.

'Most other digital SLR cameras still use many traditional 35mm film lenses on digital bodies. But since those lenses are based on designs for film and not for pixels, they deliver insufficient light at the edges of a digital camera’s image sensor.

That's bollox, it's the other way round!

'This can result in reduced sharpness and color definition, particularly when shooting with large apertures and wide-angle lenses. The E-500 does not have this problem, because it accommodates the full line of interchangeable Zuiko Digital Lenses.'

I think the marketing department is inventing problems to solve. Pity. But ignore the BS and pick out the facts.

'Four-Thirds System lens mount for Zuiko Digital Specific lenses'

So don't expect any other maker to make lenses for it - you'll have to buy theirs. That's a minus IMHO. Who remembers Yashica SLRs? Exactly. But at least it looks like a camera, which is more than their last two hideous offerings have done!

Is it my imagination or has it been designed for people who only have a right hand?

Bloke at work has one (300), I like it and it takes nice pictures.

Sigma now do four thirds lenses so plenty to choose from and if you can find the ones you want, why worry if there's another gazzilion to choose from?

Also has dust repellant features which appear to work well on his, absolutely no dust issues in 6 months, sensor is spotless.
