I’ve been printing on an Epson R4800 for about a month; setting the print quality to predominantly “PHOTO”, the other two settings above that are: “BEST PHOTO” and “PHOTO RPM”. I can’t really see much of a difference at all; is it me or is the difference so miniscule that it’s hardly noticeable? The same goes for the R2400.

Secondly does anyone know how much more ink is used printing at the higher resolutions?

So I got to thinking, (If anyone has already done the tests...) would one get away without any real loss in quality, by printing at “FINE”? Which incidentally is the lowest print quality setting, being one below “PHOTO”.

The DPI:
FINE = 720 DPI
PHOTO = 1440 DPI
BEST PHOTO = 2880 DPI
PHOTO RPM = 5760 DPI

Thx in advance.

I always print at 2880 if they are for sale. Nobody has complained yet.

I have definately noticed a difference in ink usage due to dpi. Not seen any MPG tests mind.

I know I'm over-simplifying, but how many dpi can the human eye can resolve? Maybe 250? Once two points get to within a certain distance of each other, the eye can't resolve them as two points. It's linked to the resolution of your retinas, aka 'cones per inch'

So if you have 20:20 vision and can't tell the difference, I wouldn't worry too much!

It's not going to be down to whether you can resolve the individual dots or not. If you could resolve the individual dots, you'd only see a 7 colour image. My understanding is that where the higher DPI will make itself known is in a smoother transition between colours.

I brint at 240dpi and use the lowestest setting. when the print is onthe wall behind glass your not going to notice it.

not seen the fine option on my R2400 though.

Thx a lot guys for your comments.

I've been speaking to a couple of printing bureaus/resellers and the consensus is; "PHOTO". They also seem to think that printing at either "BEST PHOTO" and most defiantly "PHOTO RPM" is a waist of ink, not seeing any real optical/visual difference.

One on the bureaus also stated that the same tests were also confirmed by a couple of there clients.
