Can any Photoshop experts help?
Discussion
Well, as a long-time lurker on this board, it's about time I came out and confessed - I read all the posts on here, I've learned a lot from them!
However, not enough it seems. :hehe: I've taken a pic which I need some help with. I know how to do the basics in Photoshop, but I don't know how to sharpen an image when the subject is slightly out of focus.
Can anyone help me by telling me how to do this? (I'm using version 5.5.)
Thanks in advance

One thing with Unsharp Mask is that there's a million and one combinations. It can be frustrating trying to get the "right" one.
A favourite book of mine suggests the following as a "general rule" for sharpening. Remember it can be applied then applied again and so on to build up the level of sharpening.
Amount 125%
Radius 1.0 pixels
Threshold 3 levels
Give that a try, and as I said - if it's not enough then repeat until happy!
Oh and, IME, always have the preview at 100% so you can tell easily if its gone too far.

There's several "interesting" methods you can use, but Gruffy's suggestion is certainly one of the best, and easiest.
There's different parameters you can fiddle with (Amount, Threshold and Something-Else-With-a Funny-Name.... ...ah, yes: Radius). They all look a bit technical when you first look at them and, probably, it's most productive to have a "fiddle" to see what they actually appear to do.
When curiosity is waning you could try a little light reading such as this site:
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/phot
to learn a bit more, or google for "photoshop unsharp mask".
At first thought "USM" would sound like the opposite of what you want!
Remeber that you can only play with the pixels you've actually got. There is a limit to what you can do in turning an unfocused image into a focused one! But also that ALL digital images will need some degree of sharpening. Some of it is done "in camera" and you may have some settings there.............
(All right, I'm wibbling on now...
... time to shut up!)
