Has anyone tried using the IS, whilst having the camera mounted on a monopod? I remember reading a few days ago (on this forum I think)that it can damage the IS.
After having done a quick bit of research on the web, some seem to think it will be fine, and others are saying it may be counter productive, as the camera is already being stabalised by the monopod, so the IS may actually cause shake on the image. The lens I am using is a 100-400L, and it will be used for motorsport.

I turn my 100-400 off on the monopod...it's just what I've allways done so can't comment on the damage thing.

I never turn off my IS and quite often use a monopod - so far nothing has gone wrong

Mode 2 is designed for panning shots, perfectly fine on a monopod.

It's tripods where you're supposed to switch IS off completely.

I've used my 70-200m L IS with a monopod for 6 months+ in "mode 2" without any issues.

Sounds like an old wives tail....

[tail spelt right for the people that are into esoteric lexicography]

Given a tripod is so stable, the feedback circuitry of the IS system can get confused by the lack of movement and "hunt" from end to end of the IS which isn't good for the lens.
