hey,

my uncle is a photographer and he has very kindly lent me his Nikon D70 to have a play about with for a while. i am new to "proper" photography and have never really used anything more complex than your standard compact digital. he explained the most important basic functions and i have the manual for light reading, but i thought i would see what the PH collective would offer in the way of advice for a newbie.
are there any useful tricks to know etc?

so over to you.....

chris

Don't drop it. Don't lose it.

RTM.

Play with it as much as you can being as inquisitive as possible.

Pester you uncle to lend you some of his expensive lenses!

Avoid 'Auto' exposure mode and the 'pretty picture' modes - start with 'P' for Program and work from there. Learn the basics of shutter speed, aperture and focal length, how and when to use them and the differences they make to the results.

That'll keep you going for a bit
