Just got my latest EOS mag and I've fallen in love!

The 1D II N has a 8.5 mp sensor slightly larger than the 8.2 mp one in my 20D. Am I going to see much of a difference through the viewfinder?

Please be quick...I'm leaving for the UK in 45 minutes

Martin.

PS - someone turn the heating on please, I get into Heathrow at 10:00 and don't want to freeze my 4R5E off!

Sensor size should have nothing to do with what's in the viewfinder, it's behind the mirror...?

(Or did I miss something )

Sorry, will it affect much the perspective of images taken with the same lens/same distance etc.

Martin.

Aaah...

www.frankvanderpol.nl/fov_pan_calc.htm

It will shorten the effective FL of your lenses.

First principles tells me that perspective depends on sensor *size*, not the number of pixels on it...

As for the extra pixels, it's not significant. (The D200 will take me from 6Mp to 10Mp, but frankly I'd rather have two more stops of dynamic range than the extra pixels).

The sensor is signigicantly bigger in the 1D even though the pixels are similar.

Using the calculator above:
horizontal FOV on a 50mm lens on the 20D is 17.06 degrees.
On the 1d it's 21.63

So using a 50mm lens on a 1D after using it on a 20D from the same spot will give you a wider fov shortening the effective FL.

The 1D has a crop factor of about 1.3x, compared to the 20D's of about 1.6x. Sensor resolution is irrelvant.

A fine choice of weapon

It's on my shopping list for next year, along with a 300 f2.8L IS.

Did you know?...it's got a microphone and you can record 30 seconds of speech to go with any/all images! (It's not the camera of choice with journos for nothing)

I think the original MK2 had that too, very handy indeed.

As a matter of fact I did

and the 8.5 frames per second can come in handy as well

Cheers

Nice wicker basket you've got there!

... if only they designed the 5D with 8.5fps, that would be a great full-frame camera !!!

But have you actually handled one? It felt exactly the same as a 20D to me...a little bit plasticy/flimsy. The add on winder on the 20D was crap, and it felt crap, and I can't help but think the 5D one will be similar. There is a gaping chasm between the quality of pro cameras and the rest.(Which you have to pay for!)

Martin.
