Did a more-than-tricky wedding 6 weeks ago and had heard nothing until just now (though bride's mother had paid the balance so all OK on that front). So you start thinking that maybe they didn't like the photos but are too polite to say so...

Plus Dave was one of those customers who knew a bit too much about DSLRs and PS for comfort...

I can sleep well after all

I don't post pix of customers but here's one of the organist looking down on the proceedings:

Great pic. He's perfectly contented there, just watching the world go by beneath him, with no-one any the wiser.

Doing my first wedding on saturday, not charging anything and not the "official" photographer so there should be no pressure but I'm bricking it!

Great pic of the organist by the way.

I've done a few weddings now in a very unnofficial capacity, each time I have been told that my pics were great as I take the far more relaxed ones that the bride and groom don't get to see being so busy having the official ones taken.

That's the idea Mrs. F! Whether I can actually make enough money to make it worth the travel and time spent there remains to be seen, but at least I get to have a nose at someone's wedding

The future Mrs Jimothy and I have been looking at photographers in South Africa for our wedding. The company we're probably going to use do 8 hours of photography! Basically they turn up for the entire day to follow the bride around, take the formal shots, then hang around the wedding as a guest, taking photos all day/evening. Very good idea I thought...

That's what we did for ours; the photographer even stated that he wouldn't do line-ups, unless we organised them ourselves and he happended to be on hand to take the shot(s)! Very happy with the results.

Ours were done in the same way by a friend of mine who sadly died of cancer last year.

Great memories of a fun day - fairly informal, small wedding which was relaxed and fun - he really captured that perfectly - playing on the beach was the most fun part. It's now exactly the kind of imagery that we provide.

The 'reportage-style' wedding is becoming more popular than ever, despite claims that it is going out of fashion.

Enjoy the day; if they're all duds you haven't lost anything, plus you got free scoff

Hang on, you said you weren't charging anything...

Part-timers! I normally reckon on noon - 10pm.

I find line-ups are the easy bits. However I don't know who everybody is, so I ask the 'boss' - invariably the bride! - to make a list of shots in advance and whip everybody into line. All I have to do is get them to look at me (hopefully all at the same time) at look happy!

It also helps if you haven't left your camera on ISO800 from the church interior shots

Not charging anything - as it's a test one I'm going to give them a link to a photobox gallery where they can buy prints - no risk for me and cheaper than "normal" pics for them. If I take any decent ones I'll make a few quid off the markup.

Excellent idea. Mind you their 10% commission does wipe out a lot of margin if you're trying to keep prices down.

I was too nice with my lot - I uploaded hundreds of the pix to PhotoBox but also gave them a DVD-ROM 'cos they asked for one. Hence so far they've ordered exactly zero prints, damn. Next time I'll have to make it a strict either/or choice I think.

Indeed, the photobox method doesn't really lend itself to well to "pro" use, despite the pro gallery label. I posted a while back for some advice on alternative methods to photobox, some of which I will look into pending the results of my first couple of outings.

Some people are very pleased that I will just offer them a disc and not try to commit them to prints; however some people will want full service. In this instance I think the better approach is to send contact sheets and get them to order prints by file number. Then I can collect the order, buy the whole lot in one go from Pixaco and send it on by SD - a bit more work for me but hopefully a useful margin.

What other solutions do PH wedding chappies use?
