I want to buy my 20 year old daughter a DSLR for her venture into freelance photography (mainly weddings) She is a Nikon person having used film SLR for several years. Is the D70s adequate or would the new D200 be a better buy in the long run.

I thought you said you wanted to buy your daughter a 20-year old SLR Clearly it's time I got some lunch...

The D200 is better, but then it's double the price so you'd expect it to be.

I think I'd get her the D50 and see how she goes from there. There's not much the D70s has that the D50 doesn't, and the money saved can go towards a nice fast lens - which in many ways is more important to the final result then the body it's fixed to.

As a D50'ist I agree, not suprisingly with Simpo, from a purely technical point of view. However, some clients can be a bit miopic and believe that their fee should be a reflection of the kit not the photos produced with it. They generally seem to belive that something bigger is better. Perhaps worth looking at second hand lower end Pro Kit.

You're right. However the average Joe wouldn't know the difference between a D50 and D200. If however someone spots the badge and realises it can be bought in Dixons, it brings the following dialogue to mind:

Geezer: 'Oi, you can get those D50's in Dixons'.

Photographical Operative: 'True, but this is a special D50'.

Geezer: 'What's special abut it?'

Photographical Operative: 'I'm standing behind it. Now f*** off back to the bar.'

(or something!)

You'll have to pay a lot for the 'big camera with a lump under it' look. However, back to lenses. I can tell you that the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 not only puts you in a league above the grockles, but allows you to get far better shots. Match it with little brother the 20-40mm f2.8 with 82mm thread, and people will take you seriously.

Personally I'd ask her. Not being funny but if she's been using camera's for 7 years and wants to move into professional photography she should/would know exactly what camera she requires for her needs.

Don't forget to add an SB-800, and if they come up to ask what body your using, just blind them!
"oops...sorry, i was just testing my flash "

Don't worry, the 70-200 is more than adequate for bludgeoning troublemakers into the ground

I did order the 20-40 but the confirmation came back saying '18-200' so hopefully they'll sort it out tomorrow.

How about a nice D100 body with battery pack, still under about 6 months warranty from Jessops?

Interesting idea. It's classed as 'semi-pro' and they're now about £700 body only - half of what they were. Ironically, the D50 will be more advanced in some aspects as the D100 is now 4 years old. Looks good though.
