Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22 and from where?
Discussion
Guys/Gals,
It looks like I'm going to buy myself another Xmas present to go with the 20d, 17-85IS and 70-300IS. So, which would you recommend:
Sigma 10-20 : UK sourced £330 with no filter approx £8 shipping
HK sourced (DigitalRev) £280 with filter but £37 shipping
Canon 10-22 : UK sourced £530 with no filter approx £8 shipping -£70 cashback voucher
HK sourced (DigitalRev) £395 with filter but £40 shipping (no VAT to pay)
Things in the Sigma's favour are that it is obviously much cheaper than the Canon and it comes with a hood which the Canon doesn't. It also seems to come out very well in reviews etc.
The saving by getting the Sigma from HK doesn't seem to be worth it once you add up all costs of the actual lens (ie £20 not including filter). However, the differential on the Canon is much greater (£103 excl filter) but taking off the £70 cashback this is reduced to £33.
Any thoughts? I understand the Sigma beat the Canon in last month's test in AP/DP (?) on value for money but don't know how it compared in the optical stakes. Can anyone shed some light? Is the Canon worth £130 more than the Sigma (at UK prices or £100 at HK prices)? Couple of comments on earlier threads about lock-ups with Sigma lenses?
Any thoughts on filters and relevant benefits of buying UK vs HK?

Although I am a CLUD member, can I add that I only buy Nikon Lenses. The savings going to inferior makes is shown with the residuals when trying to sell secondhand.

Don't know whether you noticed my comment in another thread but a 2nd hand HK sourced Sigma 10-20 has just gone on ebay for more than you can buy it new for in the UK! Sounds like 'positive' residuals to me

Thanks for that! I'll have a look at some reports on it later. However, it's 12-24 not from 10mm. As I've already got a 17-85 there's probably not enough 'new range' for me (even if some of the overlap should be better quality than the widest part of the Canon (ie 17-24ish) It's £30 more than the 10-20 Sigma but £80 less than Sigma's 12-24.
Do you know if this was tested in the same test as the Canon and Sigma?

Ive seen stuff sold on Ebay that has sold for more than you can buy it new in the UK. Ebay is no clue to true values

OK, my final offer: www.intro2020.co.uk/pages/newtamron.htm
Don't forget that you may get done for VAT and import duty from HK, which will wipe out any advantage.
I don't think that in real terns you'll notice any visual difference bewteen Canon and Sigma, so the Canon is giving you an extra 2mm for £130 more. You have to ask how much 2mm is worth to you. Oh yes, and you'll need a hood as well. So I'm leaning to Sigma (but then I would, as my fat mutha 20-40 is due tomorrow

Indeed. I've also seen it 'sold' several times before a sale appeared to me completed successfully.
Hugely volatile and not much of a guide on sales value unless you have followed the items for a period of time before making a decision.

I am pretty sure I saw (in passing) a comparison test of these 2 lenses in this week's Amateur Photographer
...and I can't find a copy of it in either Tesco's or WHSmiths!!
Anyway, was going to end up with the Sigma but should my choice change if I compare a new Sigma @ £320 or second hand Canon @ £390 ??

new canon is 500 from the bristolcameras. then £70 cash back
Thanks. They look to be the cheapest around. So, now down to £430 Canon vs £315 Sigma..
Does anyone have a copy of the AP test between the two or the test last month of all the wide-angle zooms that I believe the Sigma won (I'm sure someone mentioned it on here a couple of weeks ago but can't find the reference)
