Equipment insurance
Discussion
In the past year or so I have gone from having very little camera equipment to about £3,000 worth! I thought my car was an expensive hobby, this is going to catch up. Anyway the question is how do people insure their cameras etc. Will I be covered on my house insurance if anything is lost/ stolen or damaged when away from home or do I need to get a special policy specifically for photography equipment.
An advice would be appreciated.

House insurance will also have a max value for any item.
I took out a camera insurance policy when I was down south and in the 'fast lane', which covered my stuff - even in a locked car boot.
It was expensive though, and now I'm in the 'bit next to the car park, not even on the hard shoulder, let alone the slow lane' I don't feel I need it... but I have increased the max value of specific items on the house insurance. Not expensive.

E&L - we insure all our kit through them - very reasonable, pretty much all risks (including locked car boots) and monthly payments. Also cover international if you give them 7 days notice. Also includes public liability. Very understanding of photographers.

I couldn't get my gear covered under home insurance (they just laughed and put the phone down
), so I use these guys:
R W Mott
Do check out all the Ts and Cs though, as most insurers will have various restrictions, e.g., equipment is only covered in transit if they are transported in solid cases, or cover in a vehicle is only valid between certain hours etc...

I modified my house insurance to include personal posessions up to the value of £1k each - anything more than that I have to nominate.
Granted I have more than a grands worth of kit, but individual items are not greater in value, which they said was fine.
Costs about 2 quid a month IIRC
