got my first public telling off

taking pics of my friends at the ice rink in glasgow's george square. from the way we walked in there was no signs saying no camera's. take a few snaps before one guy comes up and asks what paper I am working for then 5 mins last another guy comes up and tells me to put my camera away. I point out that other people are taking pics and that I hope he will be telling them the same. he says they are not professional camera's and there are kids on the ice. I point out that I am not taking pics of kids but my friends. This attitute really sickens me. if I had been there with my own son would I have been told the same. a couple approched me while I was talking to the muppet and there where on my side. they could not believe what the guy was saying

A camera is a camera - it takes pictures. If you are sure there isn't a no camera policy then I'd lodge a complaint of harassment and discrimination with the place's MD.

Chelsea game earlier this season. Lots of people taking pics around me with compacts and mobile camera phone's, me using the D100 with 70-300. Cant use it, apparently "the lens is too big".
Standard stuff for a Premier League Club sadly. Compact P&S's and crappy cam phones won't get a pic anything near as good (ie sellable) as even a half-decent Digi SLR & Longish lens...
Last year we paid for my nephew to be mascot at a Hartlepool United game so i took the 20D and my old 135-400 lens along to get some shots of the day.
I made sure i asked the club if it was ok and they didn't have a problem with it, although i deliberatley kept the camera out of sight during the game so as not to annoy the Pro's on duty.
As for the self appointed Ice-Rink guard, as long as there's plenty of others using ANY sort of camera then just tell him to feck off

I'm told that it's now illegal to take pictures of children in Wiltshire. Well known local photographer was royally pissed when he was prevented from taking pictures of his grandchildren.
Do counties make their own laws?
Next step - parents can't take photos of their own children. Sooner or later common sense had to return...

No, I'm not talking about that green dress falling off Jenny Aguter (mind you that's a good thought), I mean life just get's to the point where we're all brainwashed to thinking we should be snuffed out at the point we realise it's all a charade! I'm a bit overdue myself!
This week's Amateur Pornographer's got a report on the Newtman's latest attitude and a sensible take from Austin Mitchell all about Trafalgar Square photography, but I despair - one day you won't be able to take a picture of the moon for fear of offending someone's religion or auntie....

It is rather interesting that the advent of picture taking devices in mobile phones makes the potential for sneaking a shot unspotted ever greater just at the time when more overt camera use is attracting unwelcome attention.
We do live in paranoid times with the fires of fear being stoked by the unimpressive group of people generically called "the media".
Of course the people who object the most are those with the most intrusive cameras there are - CCTV cameras.
Odd how CCTV cameras are for our own good and protection and are "anti-terrorist" but any others are generally classed as the tools of those prone to anti-social behaviour. Unless of course the CCTV cameras have failed to capture something useful at which point the calls go out for any hlep that can be offered by people who may have been serruptitiously taking the odd picture or two.
What was the mention of France all about btw? More instant cash fines for Brits unaware of laws made up on the spot? Like Tony B'liar getting ambushed by EU really. I think we should retaliate and buy up all their nuclear power stattions. Then close them down and take a profit on the carbon credits. That will show them who's the boss.
