If I embed a 50sec music wav loop into a Powerpoint taken from a recording artist's CD am I liable for copyright? Anyone any idea how much one is allowed to use within the 'Fair usage' rules? And what about photos picked up and used from google for the same PP?

Fair use rules apply to journalism and education.

Quantity is not really the issue.

Where are you doing the presentation? If they have PPL and PRS certification on the premises you will be fine. Think of a disco at a wedding reception.

However, if the music is set to images or content that may be considered offensive or against the beleifs of the songwriter you may be held liable. For example if you used a Moby song to promote stag hunting he would get upset.
Remember when the Tories used a Massive Attack song for a conference? they were very upset and I think recompence was had.

Dunno about music (well not in any useful detail)

Paraphrasing all I know - and keeping it general...

Photos start out in life as being copyright of who took 'em, except where in the world they didn't have permission. (Big issues - let's keep the lid on that worm-can!) If you're going to use an image for commercial purposes you should expect to pay for that right.

You either pay for blanket usage or for a specific purpose and it costs you accordingly.

Of course, it may be that someone's put an image up on the WorldlyWideWibble and are quite happy it's going to be used - I'm afraid that you have to the small print.

Then there's the risk management issue. It may be that no one's going to make a fuss about a little image in a presentation for home/small office consumption - I mean who'll know?

But try and get it published widely or used in a big orifice/corporation is asking for trouble!

To be on the safe side buy the rights to use the image from a stock agency - plenty of online choices spring up like iStock or fotolibra - you don't need to go to Getty prices!!
