Not sure which board this should go on, but here goes.

Am mucking about with the new video and DVD recorder I bought a couple of weeks ago. I want to know if it is possible to record tv progs onto a DVD disc, then copy the prog onto a seperate hard drive via my laptop which has a dvd reader/writer.

I'm using NTI DVD & CD Maker software which came with the DVD writer. It does seem quite complicated, and I'm afraid I'm hopeless at patiently reading instructions .

Can anyone offer a quick fix?

Fr'instance, I've recorded a film onto a disc. I chuck into my laptop & copy the files onto the seperate hardrive. The film seems to have 2 folders, Video_RM and Video_TS.

From these, can I produce a DVD which I can watch on TV via the home player?

Not sure what you're trying to do . . . you recorded a film using your dvd recorder, then you want to put that disk in your laptop and make a disk you can view . . . on the dvd recorder ? . . . do you mean just copy the disk ?

If it's a disk that you created then it should not be copy protected (unless your DVD recorder is copy protecting everything it records), in which case you need to simply copy it using a dvd writer and appropriate software . . . of which there is loads, and it sounds like you already have some . . . read the manual for yours, I use nero personally so cant help.

The VIDEO_TS and all the subordinate VOB and IFO files are everything you need to both view (from a hard drive) and burn a new DVD, presuming it's not copy protected.

If you're trying to copy a copy protected disk then I hear it's possible, but of course have never tried it myself, 'cos it's illegal . . . I daresay that google would dig up the information you need tho' . . .

Hi, thanks for your help, sorry I was too numpty to make myself clear.

What I want to do is record stuff off the tv, then save to an external hardrive via my laptop, to build up an archive of interesting tv progs/motorsports stuff etc. Then, at a future time copy a prog from the archive I've built up, back on to a disc to watch on the tv via my laptop. (Has to be the laptop 'cos it has my only dvd writer)

I was struggling because the first time I did this I seemed to have a problem with the actual recording I made. When I recorded another programme, I succesfully copied it to my hardrive, and then back to a disc as an experiment.

When I record a tv prog onto a dvd disc, I see that when I put the disc in the laptop and open the disc, there are 2 folders, VIDEO_ROM and VIDEO_TS. In the software I have, I have to drag the VIDEO_TS folder into another folder with the same name. This then copies to disc and plays back on the home dvd allowing me to watch on tv. I notice that I can't edit this recording on the home dvd machine, though.

The VIDEO_ROM folder seems to be redundant though. Why is this, and whats it for?

So I seem to have solved the problem that was the reason for my thread. Now, having copied the tv programme onto my hardrive for archiving purposes, I want to then be able to cut out the adverts and stuff. Can anyone recommend a cheap or even free resource to do this with? I am very unlikely to want to do any more editing than that.

Regards,
Heebee
