What do the hoods on the end of lenses actually do?

I normally stick 2 together on the end of my biggest zoom just to impress the girls, but I presume this is not their intended use.

I thought it was to stop sunlight/artificial ligght from entering the mens, so you only get the light from your subject? I could be horribly wrong, and it may well be to impress girls with!

They make sure all the special lens dust doesn't fall out of the end of the lens, very very important, I've superglued mine on.

Eh!? What? No that's their ONLY use, shirley?

Incident light hitting a lens from other than your subject will cause flare (at worst) and lower contrast (at least). You can't do a lot when it's hitting you full on...

e.g. interesting set of reflections through a wide-angle shown here....

...but otherwise it's like wearing a peaked cap to keep the sun off your eyes. If you're a 4-eyed- like me, you know how frustrating reflections on glass can be!

Designed by a bloke obviously.
