Help buying canon flash

I have a D30 and want to get a flash for it. The problem is that I really don't know which one to get. I know the 550EX and 580EX are very good but are they too much for my needs? It's mainly for weddings and other social events. Opinions would be welcomed!

i have the 430ex on my 20D.

for general use it's great and much easier on the wallet than the 580.
