Newbie Here Video/Editing Advice

I know this has prob. been done to death but can someone please help if you have time?!

I have a new imac G5 and also a sony handycam (cheap one)

I want to start editing my videos but dont know where to start!!

Do I need to buy a better camcorder? I have tried just plugging it in via usb etc to no avail.

Can anyone guide me / talk me through it??

imovie looks fantastic just can connect my camcorder.

Mac or PC no different. You need IEEE1394 (firewire) to get the video off the cam and into your system. I will try to avoid the temptation to say RTFM

USB (especially in SONY cams) is reserved for still phot transfer from cam to PC/MAC

PS: Uhm, it is a miniDV cam, right?
