Hi,

I am doing a new website for one of my long term customers but struggling to find some good pictures suitable for the site.

My usual stock photography avenues haven’t come up with much – all American stuff, which unfortunately is too obviously American model cars and would look crap.

I would go and take photos at one of their sites – but as you can imagine its quite hard to get them on a day where the cars are lined up nicely and the show room has “the right” cars in it. In other words, the photos never quite look good enough or show them as a big dealer.

Can anyone suggest where I can find some nice car dealer stock photos? The sort with a family standing next to a car with a friendly sales person, and rows of cars lined up nicely?

Many Thanks,
Sam

Thanks Cliff, but I think it has the same problem as the place I usually use (Dreamstime) - the cars are all american.

I need a UK one really.

Sam

Got a camera? Why not pop round some show rooms yourself and take some pickies?

Plus getting staff to cooperate is easy - and getting their punters to pose for pictures is even harder.

Just asked at work.

UK ones are

www.fotosearch.co.uk
www.punchstock.co.uk
www.stockphotography.co.uk/
and of course
www.gettyimages.co.uk

Quick look suggests getty have quite a few that could pass as a UK dealer.

Found a couple of good ones on PunchStock...

Until I saw the price. £79 for a web photo, I dont think so!

Dreamstime do photos just as good for $1 a pop - the only reason I am not using them this time is because they only seam to have american stuff

Photographers, like you, have to make a living.

How much do you charge per hour? £40? £50? £80?

So what you are saying is that a photo that it could have taken a photographer many hours to get to, set up, take, process, and then put on an agency website where they will take a whopping great chunk isn't worth the same as you charging your client for one or two hours design work on the site.

I think your appreciation of making a living is somewhat skewed.

That's why they are $1

End of the day if I go and quote my customers £560 for photos, say 7x stock photos, they will laugh and go elsewhere or ask “cant you just rip them off the site?”.

Dreamstime photos are very good, and they have a very wide range and most are well composed and perfectly good for business use. $1 per download doesn’t represent poor quality images.

As I said, they are great for everything except photos of UK cars – the images they have are good but clearly American.

While I respect that a photographer needs to make a living, they wont be getting any business from me charging £79 for a non exclusive photo unless its to my spec, taken where I choose - and thus, a totally different thing all together.

(edited the number 2 for a number 7)

How do you get from 2x£79 to £560?

Weird attitude you have to the value of IPR.

I apologise if I have caused you any offence to the photographers out there.

The logic in case I was not clear:

Average site may have 5 – 10 photos, thus if I was paying £79 per photo the cost would be around the £500 mark.

End of the day that’s beyond the budget of most small to medium companies – I charge them not much more than that for the website itself.

If I was designing a corporate site that needed such photos sure, but I am not – this is for a car dealer! Don’t take offence to the fact that I don’t want to spend eighty quid on a stock photo when I can usually buy the same quality of photo for 50p royalty free. The photographers sell good pictures on DT and other agency sites over and over to 10s and hundreds of customers in some cases – if they didn’t like the deal they wouldn’t sell their photos that way. As it turns out, everyone’s happy and Dreamstime is one of many such sites growing massively by the day.

Anyway – I will continue to look for some reasonably priced stock photos suitable for car dealer sites that are UK style. If anyone has any suggestions where I can find such photos for the kind of budget a medium sized used car dealer has, please let me know.

Many Thanks,
Sam
