Underwater with a few grand's worth of kit ...
Discussion
Came across this article and thought how challenging it must be to submerge a few grand's worth of kit on a dive a rely entirely on a watertight casing to protect your investment.

But then when I saw the shots and read about the technicalities of it I could see why someone would want to do it.
An interesting article and a visit to the photographer's own web site offers a gallery of many spectacular shots.

Still doesn't inspire me to start diving though!

Alex is an interesting guy - my girlfriend's mother (a very good underwater photographer herself) tutored him in underwater photography, and his dad is a bit of a petrolhead too (he used to race an interesting old Aston a few years ago). He also has a Hasselblad MF camera in an underwater housing too, but I suspect the Nikon gets used more
He also won one of the prizes in last year's BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Its the best thing (recreation wise )i have ever done in my life (with clothes on)
I don't doubt it is and I do envy those who partake of the joys, but I have the bouyancy of a cannon ball it seems, which would be fine for going down (I guess) but less pleasing when trying to get back up again.
I also don't have about 10 to 15 grand to invest in the kit for the photo stuff.
And I burn easily ...

10 to 15 grand LonQ? Where on earth did you get that figure from?
Even with a compact digital camera and an average housing you would be surprised by the results you can get.
My entire rig - housing, ports, strobes, stobe arms, focusing rings, the whole lot is about £3000. And that's top-top of the range stuff. The camera is a D70 and a I have a variety of lenses that cover pretty much all the bases from humpback whales to a guppy's bumhole.
A 5 megapixel Olympus camera and a Tetris housing and flash would set you back about £1200. It may not be as good as a D70 and all its associated gubbins, but it would give you some excellent amateurish results.
And as for you bouyancy - well that is why you wear a weight belt and a BC (bouyancy compensator)
Oh and I am a ginga for my sins - I wear a hat, put factor 40 & a t-shirt on and void sitting in the full glare of a midday sun...

A rough guesstimate from reading the original article and browsing the web site referenced at the top of the post. 15 may be on the high side but a Nikon D2X, a fairly state-of-the-art housing and what I suspect is not going to be the cheapest lens from the Nikon range, whichever one he uses, will all add up. And then there are the flashguns.
Got to be a bob or two whichever way you see it.
