...I can't seem to come to a decision. For a photo competition, which one would you choose? I like the B&W but would hate to lose the evening sunlight.

BW for me. IMHO it looks better, but by any account it shows more thought, as the colour version is a straight shot that anyone could have taken.

even as a big B&W fan, I'd go for colour on that (although the crappy monitor I'm using at the moment and the web-resizing may have ruined the 'true' look of the B&W image?) Depends on the competition but being a bit harsh, I might say that neither are up to your normal standards (sorry!)

I love this thread - it's a really easy multiple choice quiz:

Hmm is there a way to start the bottom in B&W and fade it upward toward color? I've been trying to do it in photoshop but I must be getting to work now...

There is, but it will make it look like your printer just ran out of ink

some sort of gradient layer mask would do the fade thing. however i've had 8 too many bottles of beer to even try.

BTW martin, colour one every time.

Then how about fading from one side to the other

I'll have to try it tomorrow...

You could go monochrome but give it a tone treatment?

Best of both worlds - at the same time might give it a whole new life?

Sort of -

(These were both done in about 30 seconds, just to see the effect)
