What will canon bring out next?
Discussion
Does anyone with a little camera-evolution knowlege want to guess what canon's 20d successor might be like? And when it might be launched, based on the time between the release of previous models.
And what MP resolution and features might it have (or be limited to) so that it doesnt replace one of their other models which are currently in a higher price bracket?
Id love a 20d, but would really rather wait for the new model, whatever it is and whenever its due to be released...

Rumours of a 30D pulled from here:

Wait until 26th Feb PMA show and, no doubt, all (if any) will be revealed. I would guess it would be out to compete with the D200 so expect similar spec.
edited because I meant a 30D.. not a D30 Agh!, bloody camera numbers.

It's due to be announced at the PMA show at the end of this month.
If you visit www.dpreview.com and have a look at their 20D forum you will see more 30D/35D/50D/xxD rumours than you would care to read about (I have given up reading that forum until after PMA)
In effect no-one REALLY knows. Canon are VERY good at keeping things quiet until the day they announce (the 5D was leaked about 2-3 days before by accident by a dutch advertising agency being sloppy).
Don't believe anything you read or any pictures of it you may see, wait for PMA later this month.
To be honest I doubt there will be anything radical enough to persuade me to upgrade my 20D, however those without a DSLR or with a D30/D60/10D are waiting with baited breath.
You can get a good idea of what it will be like by looking at the D200 specs on the nikon site, it will be comparable if not slightly better in some respects.

Whatever replacement / update for the 20D comes along, i'd say the current model is a bargain right now...it's near enough half of the launch price a couple of years ago..
If it's an update, i'd guess at a bigger rear LCD, improved buffer performance and possibly another step on the pointless Megapixel ladder...10Mp+ maybe.

Much more sensible and friendly
As long as you're a Canon owner

(Although I doubt my bank balance will have recovered from corporation/income/vat tax by then
I just cant wait around for an SLR any longer

Tee hee, we Nikonites were going through such guessing games last year
Isnt there a law of physics which states that a canon user wont swap to Nikon due to the unnatural feel of the menu systems compared? Thats a question not a statment, based on what I was told once.

An 8mp pocket cam to carry around, and a really nice canon SLR which I wont want to upgrade for a good few years. As the months turned into a year, I decided to skip the 20d. Im now wondering if I should go for a 5D (really want one!) or see if a 30D comes out. I dont have the money in my pocket today so I'll be waiting regardless...
Did anyone have a debate with themselves... the 20D vs 5D? Which did you want to go for in the end? Im guessing the 30d has to fall short of the 5D, or canon will be shooting themselves in the foot. Id love some feedback, thoughts anyone?
simpo two said:No it wont, you have a point. I suffer from upgradeitus as it is, and am hoping 'the new camera' that will hopefully be released soon will be a 10mp+ jobbie. I plan to blow up photos to poster size so every pixel counts. I feel the 5D will force me to learn more (and faster) I got to use a 5D this weekend, and loved it
If it helps to save you any money UKBob, will a 30D/40D/50D make your photography any better?
I decided not to get the D200 because the answer was 'not really'. I'll probably spend most of the saving on a lens, which will enable me to get shots I otherwise couldn't.

The 5D is a stunning camera. I got one couple of months ago. The viewfinder is huge compared to the 20D, and noticeably better than my 1D mk2.
Haven't had much opportunity to do anything serious with it yet, but I did sneak it into a Doves gig
These were at 300mm, ISO 3200 with the 75-300DO, handheld
The high iso performance is fantastic.

For most photographers with more than a couple of lenses, this will cost more than the camera body - in some cases much, much more.
ehasler said:Im sure this is much more true, I wasnt taking a cheap shot at Nikon users either, just that Id seen/heard a few debates in which canon users swore they could never move to nikon. Ed, how did you get on with that track day footage in the end?

srider, tell me more about the 5D, and why I would want one over a 20d (or a 30d assuming it will be a 10mp camera much like the 20d as rumours suggest) assuming I had the money for either. Im not especially knowlegable, if you have the time Id love an indepth opinion of the 5D.
Is the 5D better all round, or do they each have their own benefits/shortfalls in any respect?
tog said:So on the 22 feb we will know whats coming, but how long till whatever is coming hits the shelves in the UK? And is a "30D" likely to be an improved 20D, with the 5D still being half a league ahead (im just going by prices, wondering what each will offer, who each model is targeted to etc)
22nd Feb is the date Canon are supposed to be announcing their spring lineup, according to a dealer friend of mine.... expecting a 20D replacement.

Track day footage is still on the video - I've not had a chance yet to do much with it, but will let you know when it's finished
