I'm currently trying to book a week in the Lake District for this May.

I've not been before and am not familiar with the area. Can anyone recommend any places that will be good to stay in which would be handy for some good photographic locations.....?

Mrs L is also interested in photography & walking but because she will be "several" months pregnant by then we'll be doing shorter / lower / flatter walks together. However she has said it will be ok for me and Mr Nikon to have one or two days climbing a bit higher up in the scenery.

I've already looked through several brochures & websites and studied the OS maps. There certainly seems plenty of choice of where to go so thought I'd get some opinions on "the gems" that should not be missed.

Thanks everyone,
Longers

And lunching here www.sharrow-bay.com on 25th Feb
We'll be staying here www.stayullswater.co.uk on 24th - 26th Feb

Note: Not staying here www.sharrow-bay.com at £160/night!

Most (All) of the lake district is beautiful on a good day.

You could start looking here
www.virtualcumbria.net/
and pick a nice spot

GetCarter might be around soon with suggestions!

And as I've learned from my 'trying-to-get-good-landscapes-like-you-see-in-the-books' experience, I hope the weather and the light hold out for you!

I spent a few days in Keswick last year which was handy for lakes like Derwentwater, Ullswater and Crummock Water. All are very photogenic as long as the weather plays ball, although even if it doesn't you can always practice your B&W skills

Well if you dont mind a drive evey day, and want cheap accommodation, there is a Little Chef Travel Lodge, just as you turn off the M6 Junction 40 (Penrith turn off), just as you turn off westwards on the A66, its just down the road. It may help to reduce costs a bit, but on the down side, a rather tedious drive each day to the lakes.

Having been going down there for years, I can tell you that almost anywhere is very photogenic. No idea how much B & B costs, never tried it, probably not easy to get accommodation either, with the Travel Lodge, you can book in advance, and if you cancel on the day of arrival, no charge eitehr, maybe book a few days there, and a few nearer the lakes.

If you venture into Penrith, there is a lovely shop there, with the biggest number of old 35mm cameras I have ever seen, tell her indoors not to forget her umbrella though?

You haven't met Mrs L have you.....! She's been looking at cottages etc that cost just "a bit" more than the Little Chief. Mind you, she is trying to find one near a pub so she doesn't have to drive me so far for a beer every evening!!

All I need to do now is search through the old threads before going out to get myself a new why dangle lens, but which one......

All women must be programmed with the same basic needs............ good luck, just know you'l both enjoy it, even nice when wet, so many places to go and see. Dont forget to go up the Kirkstone pass, excellent pub at the top, and on a clear day, stunning views.

I would highly recommend anywhere around Ullswater, and in particular Glenridding and Patterdale, fantastic scenery and a lot quietier than other parts of the Lake District, there are umpteen B&B's around the area and a couple of hotels, or if you fancy some self catering why not try Patterdale Hall estate
www.phel.co.uk/MainWeb/index.html
Set in 300 arces it has a variety of accomodation from cosy little bothy's for 2, to log cabins, farm houses and a couple of apartments in the main hall all set in a fantastic location.

Here's another site for you

Ullswater from Glenriding

The famous boathouse near Pooley Bridge

PLenty of local wildlife

Cool pic!

(And the others)

Langdale is particularly nice, just leave Ambleside and head for Scafell Pike.

If you're looking for a B&B I'd heartily recommend the Riverside Hotel in Ambleside. As friendly and helpful as you could wish without being obtrusive. I've paid a lot more and had much less.
