Some good ones, some thought provoking and a couple that don't, to me, look that great. What do you think?

I like all those. Some may not be technically challenging, but all are excellent examples of press photography, of tellling a story in a single frame, in it's various fields. Worthy winners.

Jeez, I thought I had a black out look on life. The panel choosing that lot have me beaten hands down.
Not exactly uplifting are they?

You know, I thought it would be 'hungry black people' even before I clicked on the link.

That's one thing I liked about NZ - it's not all doom, gloom and suffering.

Not sure if it was intended John, but that comes across as quite unfeeling in my opinion.

Personally I don't find it to be all doom and gloom, it simply brings to light what is going on in the world and, to a certain extent, justifies making a donation to such causes every month (I hope I'm not alone in once-in-a-while thinking 'is it really worth it, is the money going to the right people?' etc).

I'll be honest, when I clicked on the link I prepared myself for seeing many examples of "fallen american soldier", but the one I saw was done well (IMO) and worthy of its inclusion.

Great images IMO

Not to me it didn't...I thought the same...and it was more to do with the world we live in being over PC, and it not good enough to be compassionate...you have to be seen to be compassionate. All IMHO of course.

Martin.

The problem is it's World 'Press'. It has to be newsworthy, which = doom and gloom. 'No news is good news' which is why there aren't many shots of fluffy kittens of close ups of flowers.

I think as soon as you see 'World Press' you have a good idea of what the images are going to be like. I thought this years winning image was quite beautiful to be honest:

It's being a bit anal, I know, but my interpretation of the image is that they're in a food centre which would suggest to me that they're being fed. I take that as a positive, and I suppose that's the beauty of photography - every image is open to varying interpretations.
