This is one of my cats, "Christina" putting on her bat ear pose. Following on from the other thread, this was (accidentally on purpose) taken at ISO 1600 1/10th at f3.3 (actually f2.8 but for some reason it reads f3.3?)

It was handheld which is why its not sharp and was taken on my D70 with 60mm micro.

I know its a rubbish shot really, but I want to know how I should have done better. I had the cam on programe mode. Does that mean that putting the iso up to 1600 would have made no differencs to the end result?

Thx for help btw.

Apertures on macro lenses do funny things. Believe me, it's better not to know.

I think the basic problem was insufficient light to get a good result. Program mode means the camera will use a medium aperture and medium shutter speed (that might be another reason why it said 'f3.3'.

IMHO you have two options. Take control: use Aperture Priority mode and dial the aperture as big as it will go. If you have a 50mm f1.8/1.4, use that instead.

If, even when you've set your largest aperture, the indicated shutter speed is still too low for a steady shot, pop the flash.

I would have used manual mode. set shutter speed to 1/30s-1/60s, set aperture to get your choosen DOF and used flash. take a pic then check to see what it was like. if it is too bright turn flash down. with an speedlight you could bounce and use the small white refector card on the flash head to give a more diffuse light pattern. your cat is not so bad being all dark. my little one is black and white white is a paint lol
