Another one over the parapet
Discussion
Thanks folks, I never really considered them before as my main criterion is 'Is it good enough to hang on the wall?'.
NZ indeed, taken on Dec 27 near Russell in the Bay of Islands. My favourite place in the world so far.
D70, 70-300mm ED and Aperture Priority set to max (as usual!). Top one is 1/2000th sec and -0.3EV to help stop the surf burning out.
The colour shot is easy to grasp; you can picture the girl taking a massive swipe at the ball and scuffing it; the ball just trundles a few yards braked by the surf. The position of her limbs is amazing, yet 100% natural. Single shot using anticipation; I never use burst mode.
The second shot, to me, works best in b/w. I can study it much better in b/w. It's deeper. She radiates attitude yet is lost in thought, eyes down: maybe bodyboarding is harder than she thought. I love the bedraggled hair, and the light and walking position seem just right. Compositionally, the seaweed at bottom right balances the bodyboard on the left.
But in colour, it's just a girl walking up the beach.
Is that bollox or do you think so too?

Those are pure "class" John.

FAO UKBob...proof (if it was needed) that it's not the equipment...it's the photographer that makes the difference
Just kidding simpo
Nice pics - I particularly like the split second of action frozen in the first photo
Love the 2nd one! It works really well in B&W I think.
The 1st one is good, but I'd also like to see this in B&W as I'm not sure the colour adds to it - or maybe even B&W with the ball in colour?
It's also good to see that you can still photograph a young child without being locked up, which would probably be the case here in the UK
ETA - I think also a tighter crop on the 1st one might work well - maybe even turning it into portrait format?

Hi Ed, feel free to experiment!
Had it just been me on the beach with a 300mm lens, I'm sure I'd have got some funny looks. However I was staying with the family, we were all sitting together and the parents were more than happy for me to add to their photo album.
NB: It's amazing how (fully grown) girls in bikinis can spot a telephoto lens from half a mile away, and watch it out of the corner of their eye constantly. Damn!

I think a big Tele just looks very out of place on a beach in the summer. Even the with the most innocent of intentions, I suspect 90%+ of onlookers would reckon you were trying to get pics of boobies!_dobbo_ said:

I'll have to get a compact with 10x zoom and disguise it as a can of Lilt.

No not bollox at all , on first fe secs of looking at the first pic i could not make out what i was looking at because of her stance , and yes she is full of tude in the second one and i can imagine in colour the atmos would be lost
