Possibly the longest image on PH!
Discussion
The thread on panoramas inspired me to dig out a sequence of NZ photos I took with just such a thing in mind.
Nikon D70 with 18-70mm lens set to 35mm, manual exposure f6.3 @ 1/250th. Knowing how the result was going to be used, I deliberately set the image size to 'M', so each source image was 2240 x 1488 px. With camera set, I used the Simpo Mk 1 Bipedal Tripod and kept going, turn and fire, until 11 images later I was back to where I'd started.
I then bunged the whole lot in PS and used its Photomerge option to join them together. Thius gave an image 23004 x 1357 px which I cropped, resized and sharpened to give this. It's the view from Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands.

There's got to be a Java applet / flash file or something out there you can bung that into to allow seamless scrolling all the way around...
I've done it here, only my ftp server is down so I can't upload to show off
Righty-ho, managed to upload it a different way - www.mercia.biz/pan/pan.html
Let if load, you can control the pan by moving the mouse, left mouse button zooms in, right mouse button zooms out.

Servers are running heavy today, I can connect, try again?
Nice shot John
Are there 'tricks' to using the photomerge option? I've only had a limited play with it and the default results weren't actually as good as using Canon's own PhotoStitch product. Might of course be down to the workman rather than his tools though

It couldn't put them together automatically; it left me with two joined together (wrongly) and the other 9 as thumbnails above. All I did was drag them into the main window in the right order and they snapped to! Very intuitive and easy to use, although the combined file sizes made it work hard on my Athlon 1800+.
There are some visible joins in the sky towards the right hand end but these could be reduced with further work. All in all, as I had good source images, it was very easy. I din't use wide angle as all the interest was in a fairly narrow strip, and I know from previous experience that the wider you go, the greater the distortion and the harder it is to get a good panorama.

Should be working now
PS left the image totally unmolested (to keep Simpo's www on it)

Good advice IME.
