Dungeon troubles
Discussion
After getting thoroughly pissed at the pub last night, a mate and I decided to scale the walls of a local castle, and explore the dungeons (as you do). I'd had far too much beer, and kind of lost my balance and 'toppled over' falling from down from a ledge and landing horizontally on the ground. My beer coat usually protects me from the cold and falls of this nature, but after the rains the bloody dungeons had flooded and I landed in half a foot of water
My camera went under with me, and is now completely dead.
On the upside, it was insured
And I need a new pocket camera and an SLR anyway. Is it normal for insurance companies to give you a choice in the replacement if you pay the difference, or even a voucher perhaps if the model they suggest as a replacement isnt a camera I want? Would everyone agree the chances of it working again or being repairable are nil?
The memory card is also soaked - Hopefully moisture wont be trapped inside or it will never dry. Im leaving it for a week to dry before trying it as I dont want to short it out, unless anyone has any better suggestions?

The camera certainly won't work again, don't know about the card but if you can make sure you clean the contacts of any corrosion before trying in you new machine (or anyone else's). As far as insurance companies go, I know one friend who dropped her SLR and who received Jessops vouchers from the insurance company, unfortunately they arrived after she'd bought a camera from Link because she thought she'd get a cheque instead

Re the memory card. If you can, open it up and (if muddy) wash it down with de-ionized water. *Not* tapwater - de-ionized water is much less conductive than tapwater and will leave no residue. You can get it in 1 gallon containers from car spares places. Then let it dry out in a warm (but not hot) place.

It's just the combined mental power of the PH Photography crew telling you to buy a camera

After getting home and changing into dry clothes, we decided to storm the beach under cover of darkness with my marine issue smoke bombs. I dont remember falling into the sea, but the series of photos shows me dry at first, then completely soaking wet (again) this time from the waist down.
I woke up to find the usual cuts and bruises, melted plastic on my shirt, 2 pairs of wet shoes, 2 pairs of wet combat trousers with the latter pair covered in bright orange smoke stains. I vaguely remember dropping to my knees and rolling around on the couch cushions Id put down for my mate to sleep on whilst choking on a peanut (it wasnt funny, took me 5 minutes to stop choking) and the cushions are also now speckled with orange stains.
Some good did come of last night though
I bumbed into a gaggle of photographers on the pier who introduced themselves as the Eastbourne photographic society, and invited me to sign up and join them. Ironically, they meet up at the local blind society. Im sure I'll have something positive to contribute, as they are a somewhat older not very exciting looking bunch
