Well, thanks to you guys I've gone and bought a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro. Initial impressions are good and I'll post some proper photos asap. However, I thought you might be interested in the comparison shots below. The shots are taken using a 70-300mm IS USM, a 10-22mm and the new 100mm macro. All shots are the JPGs straight out of the camera to be fair for the comparisons. The RAWs haven't been processed yet.
Although the piccies aren't supposed to (and wouldn't) win any awards, they were taken purely for the comparison. Comments welcome though.

1. 100mm Macro

2. 70-300 @ 220mm

3. 10-22mm @ 22mm

4. 100mm Macro up close

5. 100mm Macro

6. 70-300 @ 110mm

7. 10-22mm @ 22mm

Hi Cirks.

Interesting. I assume number 4 is not actually in macro mode, and is just focussed close-up.
I took a few close-up shots with my 28-80mm at the weekend, which came out ok, more practice needed of course, but I'd like to be able to get a bit closer.
Am thinking about picking up some close-up lenses as something to have a play with before I get to being able to have a proper macro lens. Ultra-wide has to come first though.

can't remember whether it was on min focussing distance (31cm) but it was pretty close to it. The bit of the peony in the photo is only about 1.5inches long.
