Well, the D70S is really cool. But it could be cooler. So... I've decided it's time to invest in a macro lens! If anyone ever gets around to paying me, that is.

But the question is - which one? There's loads of info on these things out there, too much in fact. Which is why I need your help.

So. To get right to the point - what macro lens would you recommend? I'll start another thread on how to demand money from clients.

Hi SGirl

I use a Sigma EX DG 105mm 2.8D, which is especially designed for digital cameras (as the DG tag suggests) and in my opinion it's a very good lens; only "down" I could find is AF precision and speed: it does not reach the focus in a single, smooth movement like nikkor lenses, but with 2-3 micro-adjustments after the first major movement. Anyway, I never use AF , so it doesn't bother me at all. I had the chance to compare the quality of photographs taken with the Sigma and the homologous Nikkor (which costs twice the price, here in italy), and have to say I found no significant differences between the two (apart from the price, in fact); I must clarify anyway that I use the macro lens just for surgical photography: this means that my opinion can't be "360° complete" as, for example, lighting conditions are particular and always "standard" and colours in the operative field are only a fraction of the whole spectrum (the red/yellow side). Since I don't want anybody to faint or anything, no shoots attached this time

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to have a look round and see what I can find.

Marco, if you want to send any sample shots, feel free to e-mail me. It's always interesting to see other people's work.

Hiya!

Okay, now someone has finally paid me, I think we're in business.

Having looked at all the options, I think I'm going to go for the 90mm Tamron. Does anyone have any closeup shots from one of these lenses that they could post so's I could have a quick peek at what it's capable of?

Cheers.

Okay, so I changed my mind already. The Sigma it is! I think. Maybe I should give it another couple of days...
