I've never worked out how to do this.. (PS / PSP) advice?
Discussion
I know. I'm an idiot.
I need to put this logo onto a web page but without the white background - it will sit over a gradated colour. How do I 'grab' the logo, lose the background and save it so that it will sit over any grad without a solid colour behind?
Free week for two in Martin's house in Spain for the first to help (I'm sure he won't mind
)

Edited to add... before you say it... I can't RTFM as I don't have one (a slight oversight I know)

Steve, in PSP (9), goto Image -> Pallette -> Set Pallette Transparency. Image must be set to 256 colours as it needs to saved as a GIF, then you specify the colour you want to make transparent, in your case white. Now just save it as a GIF, and add it to the web page as normal. You need to be careful of halo's though so your original background colour should be as close to the background you're going to put it on as possible, espeically if the image is anty aliased.
Sorry just getting to grips with PS so no idea how to do it there.
Hope that helps and that I haven't got the wrong end of the stick

Setting the transparency will do it as above, otherwise use the magic want tool to select the text, and feather the selection by (say) 2 pixels. Now copy that selection into a new document and you should be ok.
You may get a tiny bit of white fringing, but you can use the colour replacer to get rid of that if required.
All things considered using a transparent gif will likely be easier and quicker.

Turn the background layer into an editable layer (double click on the layer in the layers palate) It becomes 'layer 0'. Then double click on 'layer 0' and dialoge will pop up. Use the top slider in the bottom right of dialoge box and move white end of slider till background becomes transparent.
