is that a bee? may sound stupid but it is so close up and detailed it has no context for me.
That is a crticism of my own lack of knowledge and not having a go at the pic which is lovely. In a horrible B-Movie kind of way.

Martin, this and all the macro stuff you do is fantastic, but how on earth do you get your insects to stay still long enough, do you drug them !!! As soon as I get within a few feet of any insect, butterfly etc they hop/fly off - very annoying, so a I get a blured shot or a perfect shot of a leaf at the best nothing anywhere as clear and detailed as yours. Oh on second thoughts perhaps I'm missing the point and you're actually an expert taxidermist, and just out of view is a huge nail

OMG that is a very good shot, but very scary.

So what is it then? a Wasp? or Bee?

It's a bee...or at least it looked like a bee. He seemed to be high on Honeysuckle scent and it seemed he was oblivious to me.

Id love to see the exif details.

Excellent DOF control too, how d'ya manage to keep so much of the bee in focus, or is that image heavily cropped?
What lens did you use btw?

Those are full frame...no crop.
Lens is a Canon 100mm Macro + 65mm of extention tubes.
EXIF? 1/125th @ f29, ISO 400, Flash (Canon 580 EX) set at 2/3 over.

Superb martin, better than the butterfly ones I think.

I guess at 165mm you don't have to be that close to the little blighter to get the shot? Or are you 12" away?

Whatever, these are great.

Martin, three questions for you-
1) flash aimed straight or angled?
2) 'pure' flash or any form of diffuser
3) is the exposure compensation something you've found to be required specifically for macro with the flash or just in general?

The subject is about 3" from the front of the lens.

1) Angled down
2) The 580EX has a built-in diffuser screen that was in place.
3) Specifically for macro with the extention tubes.

People who can't drive properly buy blue ones, silver ones and TVRs. That would explain it
