Best first camera
Discussion
It depends on whether you want a simple point & shoot camera or something that's more advanced with more control. I don't know much about P&S cameras. The one I can recommend is Fuji S5500 (I think S5600 now is an updated version). I know someone who uses it for motorsport. Although it doesn't have DSLR-like control and speed, the images are great. But the most important thing is how you use the camera. But that will hopefully come in time.

For the money you could get a Point and Shoot digital, or perhaps a decent (if a little old) film SLR and lenses. Depends what you are after. You can learn a lot about composition even on a compact, but for all the other stuff you really need an SLR.
If you can push the budget a little I would highly recommend this as the best of both worlds...
Canon D30

Hi guys,
I'd like to get into photography. With a budget of £100-£200 what can I expect to get as a good starter?
I'd like to photograph cars and scenery mainly, in colour and black & white.
Any advice from you snap happy folk will be gladly received.
Thanks
Lazy
If you want to actually learn something about photography the best thing would probably be an old fully manual SLR such as a Canon AE-1, a Pentax K1000, or maybe a Nikon F3 along with a few good prime lenses (avoid zooms, they are evil
) Otherwise if you just want to take some pics to post on the web you could probably get get e fairly decent point and shoot for that budget.
Hmmmm ....
... I have a Nikon N8008 (801 in the UK) that I was thinking of getting rid of. Would that be of any interest to you?
(Depending on what you're looking for, there's a lot of things to go along with it from lenses to filter and also an older tripos I no longer use - they're all backups to current stuff and all very well used, but still in good working order).

Hell - forget mine!
Get onto ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NIKON-N8008-F-801
I will say that I think this is an excellent first camera .... and with the $ as weak as it is, this thing is £30 plus postage!
As for the F3 ... great camera ... really, seriously good - this one's being given away: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-F3-BODY-A
I'm going to stop looking on ebay - these prices are getting quite depressing. This is an F80 (for me I'd much prefer the F3 or F801) but it's in pristine condition: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-F80-black

No chance for £100-200.
Not with a few primes, but you could buy an F3 with a constant aperture Nikkor short zoom and have change from £200 (distressingly).
Many of the comments made on the photography forum by people with 'prosumer' DSLRs suggest that a weekend with a full manual SLR, or even a rangefinder, would be time well spent.

There's nothing wrong with starting with just a 50mm
At a later date when his budget will allow he can add a 28/35 and an 80mm
I know nothing about Nikons, other than that they are the only camera manufacturer whose manual focus lenses can also be used on their auto focus bodies and the F3 was the first manual camera that came to my mind. So if the F3 is over budget any good manual nikon will do.
And if he really wants to learn photography he shouldn't touch a zoom lens even with a bargepole. With a zoom lens it's almost impossible to learn and understand the differences in perspective between different focal leghts

There isn't, other than that Nikon primes are still relatively highly valued
When I dig out the film cameras I often still shoot with a 50mm. scalper said:

I wouldn't go as far as to say he shouldn't touch them with a barge pole, but I do take your point.
These damn digitals make life too easy - just throw away anything that doesn't work without learning why, nobody learns their craft anymore
