D2H Metering problem
Discussion
Was wondering if there are any other D2H owners on here and if so has anyone suffered metering failure.
After a night spent in the car up at Pistonfest (v.bloody cold) my camera suffered it, metering just locked at one exposure on programme mode causing massively overexposed shots as mine locked at about 1/2 second at 2.8, exposure did not change regardless of if you pointed it skywards or at you feet and if you changed it from 2.8 to f8 it would then adjust the shutter speed to longer - thankfully you could overide it in full manual mode and judge exposure (post shot) on the screen but as far as the meter was concerned you were then way underexposed, of course the shots came out ok.
From what I am finding on the internet it is a known issue and cold has often been linked to failure as it is a particular type of circuit board that goes, when fixed they get an updated flexible one instead. My concern is that my camera is 18 months old (I am not the first owner but have the original invoice) and therefore out of warranty; dropped it into Kingston repair centre myself so that I could explain problem face to face and let them know that I knew it was a known issue and keeping fingers crossed they will be stumping up at least a chunk of the repair under goodwill - anyone been down this route with Nikon, how good are they with out of warranty repairs? Don't mind paying if its something I have done but when it is a weak design point then it kinda grates.
Anyway, if you have a D2H and not had the upgrade then may be worth checking to see if yours comes under the ones that might be affected (later ones were sorted once the problem became apparant). If you don't, sods law it will fail on you at a critical moment.

Had you been the original owner you would have a case that the camera was either not "fit for purpose" or not "of saleable quality" (can't remember which) under the Sale of Goods Act.
As the second owner though I'm not sure whether those rights extend to you. I'd hope that Nikon will fix it as a goodwill gesture since it's supposed to be a "pro" camera.

Looks like a freebie Nikon fix.......Nikon Support
Genius thank you....
.......... Had a conversation with them today and it sounded like good news as they were saying it was booked in to fix as a "known fault" but they still being cagey about saying much more than that it was currently in the workshop and would be about a week, I guess they don't want to say anything is free yet in case they turn up something else. Looks like good news though as that is exactly the symptoms I had.

Last year my meter on my D2H did exactly that a few weeks before the 12 month waranty expired. It is a known problem and was at the time discussed a great deal especially on the www.nikonians.com website.
Nikon are very reluctant to say there is a problem otherwise why didnt they recall the impacted cameras. I have had good service from Nikon UK with regard warranty work and other adjustments I believe were required to my D2X
I am not sure how you will stand outside the warranty period but fingers crossed they will do it as a gesture of goodwill

Will update the thread when I know for sure that they have covered it, but it is looking hopeful.
Any others owners out there, as I say, worth getting it checked out. Much nicer to have it sorted when it is convenient to you rather than waiting for it to go down on the worst possible day. I am just thankful this happened now, if it had gone at Le Mans I would be mucho annoyed, Pistonfest was less important
