Hi,

DSLR newbie here and have decided on a 350D, Can any of experts have a look at this and tell me what its worth. I would like to give him an offer which he said, ok. What should I offer him?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl

Many Thanks in advance.

I think you can get the new 350D with 18-55 for less than £500, so maybe 2nd hand value would be 2/3 of that? 75-300 is an old model and it has dust in it, so it's worth no more than £50. The case should really come free with the camera + lenses, and 512mb card now doesn't cost much. You could pick one up from ebay for less than £10. Hope this will give you some ideas for the offer.

And when you buy 2nd hand cameras and lenses from ebay, it's best to confirm with the seller in advance about the return policy as you may find them not in perfect working order. And the seller would just say it was perfect when they left the house.

"Postal insurance not offered"

Perhaps I'm getting cynical in my old age?

A scruffy 75-300 is essentially valueless. A high street dealer would sting you around £350-400 for the 350D and 18-55 used. Since you won't be getting any after sales support I'd suggest no more than £250.

Yeah, many sellers say 'postal insurance not offered'. They could just add a few more pounds and send it Special Delivery but some sellers don't give you that option. I think they should if they are selling more expensive items like camera/lens.

insurance on RMSD is capped - it might even be as low as £100, so you'd need to go with the option of additional insurance.

I wouldn't want it sent without some cover for loss or damage in transit. But then I'm fairly risk averse and I don't think it's the sort of thing I'd buy of ebay at all.

Thanks for your replys.

I am not really happy with buying this on Ebay now. Dirty lenses etc I dont want to be stung!

Apart from reccomendation (on here?) is it an expensive option for second hand in a shop? Jessops maybe?

Or should I not be a tight arse and just get a new one? Or a 20D lol?

You really have to shop around for second hand items, and Jessops would be the last place I'd look. I didn't even know they still stocked second hand gear? It would be a good idea to get the latest issue of Amateur Photographer and check the ads, and phone them as ads aren't totally up to date.

London Camera Exchange remain a good used outlet. I'm not really convinced enough about the longevity of DSLR bodies to want to buy used, although this may just be paranoia on my part. Used lenses, however, can provide some excellent bargains. My 50mm Canon lens was £35 including the Eos it was attached to !

Jessops Used: 0845 458 7002 They're leaving the used market altogether but you might get lucky.

high st dealers like LCE still ask £350-£400 for a 3ood let alone the 350 , I cant imagine a 350d being old for £250 unless its dead lol

£400 for a 300d ? Someone's having a laugh. I've seen two or three 350Ds in that price range. The Ebay 350D is currently bid to £102. Bear in mind that it's only worth what a dealer will give in trade-in, not the window price.

That's not true. They're worth what someone (anyone, not just a trader) will pay for them.

Bahahaha - the camera I mentioned above ? A 1000F - like they want £69.99 for body only

Odd, LCE used to have quite sober pricing

I think the current going rate for used 350D (body only) is around £400 in a shop.

Yes, I've seen that happening so many times! I believe they just don't do enough research.

It's because ebay is still perceived as a place to get bargains. It can be, but it's not as easy as it used to be. I bought a phone in a shop and decided I didn't like it, 10days later I'd sold it on ebay at a 20% profit.

Made me wish I had purchased 50 of them!
