I can just about justify buying the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II . But I have a feeling (more worry) that Nikon will bring out something bigger than there 12 mega pixel D2X to catch up and match or better Canon. As both cameras have been out a while, its that time when you could buy something which will be superseded very quickly. I have bought enough Apple Macs to know this! Anybody know whether Nikon have anything new launching soon.

Thanks Graham

Do you have any Canon or Nikon kit at the moment? Surely which body to buy is going to be based on exploiting your collection of lenses?

They are both, by repute, stunning cameras.

Do you simply have to have "the best camera in the world" or something?

With your theory, you'll be waiting forever. Just go out and get a Canon.

Canon vs Nikon ? That's about as incendiary as Ferrari vs Porsche or Liverpool vs Everton !

I'd go with whichever one you already have lenses for. If you don't have any gear from either manufacturer already then you're certainly going in at the top end.

You might find a simpler body and more glass plus some books and courses works out better.

Just need some back up before I spend that amount!. I'm a retoucher in a big London Ad agency. Always been my trade. I often need very high res shots for backgrounds, sky's, reference, visuals, my freelance etc. Maybe submit some images for librays as well. No, I dont have any good enough lenses/kit for Canon or Nikon that I could use. Photographers are trying to nick' my work, time to get even!

"but the MkIII is supposed to be out at Photonika show in Sept I think. " Thanks flameop I'll try and look into that.

Thanks, and will keep you updated.

Maybe you could trade some of your work/time with a photographer or two and borrow some gear to try ?

I've got a Nikon and love it, but if I was spending pro money on a body I'd go Canon.

edited to fix demented grammar.

i've just swapped my mkI for a mkII i don't care if they bring another out in september. my mki has performed flawlessly for almost 3 years and just shy 150,000 frames and has been dropped from a good height twice and didn't break. loving my mkII it's a pure beast.

Have you considered medium format + digital back? Prices are coming down, so aren't a million miles away from a 1Ds II + a few decent lenses.

16MP Phase One (refurb) for £5500 here

I dont doubt the quality of either camera. I work with photographers that have them. Its just that if I knew a new model is imminent I'd hang on for that.
