I have really got into my photography over the last 6months - year.
I have been shooting with my new SLR and have thousands of images of cars, birds, insects, babies, etc etc.
What would people reccomend RE: intresting subjects? I know loads of stuff can be done in your own home but I would like to get ''out there''
Whats the deal RE press passes / taking pictures of intresting events - where should or could I start? (bearing in mind I am a newbie and have a lot to learn)
Any pointers / suggestions greatfully received!

i have also really got into photography in the last year.
recently i have found that gig photography can be very interesting. you will have to find a venue that is happy with you using proper equipment as many commercial places wont allow any camera with a proper lens, but if you look around you will find them (my student union is fine with it and has good lighting so is very good).
it can also be an interesting challenge as you have to get used to using fairly slow shutter speeds unless you have a very good lens and high ISO, but it can be very fulfilling if you get it right.

i have seen a few bands who are reasonably famous at the moment (athlete, jack johnson, kubb). i guess the most famous people i have seen would have to be the beach boys, but there were only 3 of the originals left and they were getting on a bit.
i am going to see bob dylan next month which could be pretty special (unfortuantely he is ofcourse playing at places that dont allow proper photography).

What about other sporting events. I find them quite good as you don't have to find the subject it's pretty much ready made, so you can concentrate on compostion and the technicalities as well. Each different sport also lends itself to different techniques. Things like horse jumping, rugby, canoeing (someone posted some fantastic shots here a while ago), kite surfing, bowling etc.
And there's always various forms of motorsport - I'm trying to get to something different all the time now, and stuff that I'm not that interested in, bikes for example.
