advice required on nikon d70
Discussion
I have been offered the following. not knowing much about cameras, ids this a good deal and suitable for an enthusiastic novice?
The text below the link is the email I received.
www.f1cameras.co.uk/shop.php?id=341&level=
Click on link above………This is the “KIT” I bought……plus, I also have a 1GB Flash Memory Card which holds tonnes of photos and cost about £140…..I have the original box it all came with including disks for computer downloading etc as well as the USB camera to computer cable….I also have a camera bag and a couple of nice lens covers….one is a clear UV Filter….more to protect the lens and I have a Polarizing filter also….I think one is made by HOYA and one is a Nikon, the clear UV was about £15 and the polarizer about £30.
I even have the little clear plastic clip on cover to protect the back screen which I have never taken off so everything scratch free……in fact, the whole camera, if I boxed it, you would struggle to know it had ever been used. Of course I have all the lens covers etc…..all in all a brill buy to whichever lucky bugger gets to buy it.
I am asking £400 for the lot……pretty much half price of what it all cost originally and it is about a year old…..I could probably even dig out the original receipt of purchase!
I have gone on to e-bay (click link below) just to make sure I am offering a top price and someone there already has bids on his “D70 Kit”, same as mine at £515 and his reserve has not yet been met!…..so £400 certainly a great price and a genuine “Mates Rate”.

1GB Flash memory for £140? Someone saw him coming!
That being said, I just sold pretty much the exact same thing, right down to the polarisers and UV filter, and I got £450 for mine from the first person I offered it to - with a queue of three other people waiting to buy it. I thought I'd sold it too cheap if I'm honest but I got a quick sale which is what I wanted... £400 is a bargain and I'd have his hand off if it were me!
Chrissie, difference between D70 and D70s - "s" has different menu structure (you can upgrade the D70 with this) and also a bigger screen. I might be wrong but I think it also has a wired remote.

I've just paid about this money for a brand new E300, and the accessoires . . . so go figure.
I use the D70 for work and I'm not a Nikon fan and prejudiced but . . . well, maybe someone grabs it for your price
. . . you never know what happened to the thingy. E300 body is titanium, D70 looks way more vunerable . . . is it clean inside, check with the lens of, is there a UV filter on the lens? keeps away dust etc.
I'd look for a D50 when you really don't need the extra bits . . .

Yeah, I thought the same about £140 1GB CF.
Are you buying it from someone you know? For example, if there was a fault, would you be able to get back to the person and get a refund? I've found that ebay sellers are very reluctant when it comes to this type of situations. I guess it's just me but I just don't feel comfortable buying a 2nd-hand camera from a total stranger. However, £400 seems like a reasonable price, so go for it if you feel comfortable about it. But I would check the camera and lens first before committing to anything.
AFAIK, D70s has a larger LCD, but I've heard that any other modifications can be applied to D70 with firmware updates. But I wouldn't believe what I say completely considering my knowledge on Nikon gears.

out of interest, does anyone know what the major differences are between the D70 and the D70s? just curious.

IIRC the only physical difference is that the D70s has a slightly larger rear LCD.
The other differences (better AF & metering supposedly
) are "do-able" to any D70. I have the upgraded menus, AF, metering etc on my D70 - it's a free download from the Nikon Support site. Sorry to hear that you missed out. I'd keep looking for a D70, rather than a D50 (personal preference!)

Plus, the firmware upgrade means that it gives you a sensible estimate of the number of pictures remaining (mine used to say 90 on a 1Gb card, now it says 171).
