Hi All,

This may seem like a daft question, but who do you guys put the black border around the pictures like in the Canary Wharf thread ?

Thanks
James

Using Photoshop:

Select background colour you want
Image... Canvas Size
Increase canvas by, ooh, about 30px for a 750px wide image, both horizontally and vertically

Job done!

Probably very similar process in Paintshop Pro and others.

You can, of course, add a bit of black, then a bit of white, then some more black (or other combinations of colours) to give this effect:

As miniman says, just expand the canvas in PS and fill with black etc.
or even add a bit of inner shadow and create this sort of effect as shown on the Canon forum

looks quite smart

Or use Photoshop actions such as Simple Borders. www.jakerlund.net/page.php?id=6 There'll be plenty more if you search on the net.

hmm, I'm wondering it's that why and not how...

The contrast of the picture to the black to the thread makes it stand out from the rest...

All you have to do in Paint Shop Pro X is choose the option to "add border" you then choose the size & colour.

I find that if you have a bleached out sky or very light subject, the original composition is lost or the photo appears to fade into the background...so sometimes it helps, others it doesnt.

Thanks very much, exactly the answer I was looking for.

They do look far better on a forum with a border.

Many Thanks

I have 2 actions set up in PS, one for white, one for black.

Basically, i resize to 3500x2333 px @ 300 dpi. then ctrl a to select the whole image, select edit from the top menu, scroll down to stroke, the add a 20 px of the same colour as the main border, black for this example, select it to be on the inside. I then repeat this but change the settings to 8px and white, this then gives the 2 colours.

Then select image from the top menu, scroll down to canvas size, select relative, units to cm, select the colour you want, black, and then enter in the ammounts of 1 to each of the 2 boxes. This will then add a border around the outside of the image, so you get a small black inner border, thin white, then thick black.

If you then want to add more at the bottom, to insert more text, carry out the same proceedure as above, but then add a second canvas size adjustment, but this time, put a figure of 2 cm in the horizontal selection, then where you have all the arrows, click on the top middle one, click ok, this then adds another 2 cm block to the bottom only.

Thats how i do it, there will be other ways, but thats easy, and i have it set in an action.
