Forgive me if I'm being dim (nothing unusual there), but why do people blank out registration plates on car pictures? What difference does it make?

Its a token gesture really

A; might just prevent Porsche/Tivs being targetted by thieves using a public forum to shop for prospective cars
B; prevents insurance companies from questioning cars pictured on trackdays v-max, et al

Also cloning and manufacturers have used trackday pics to invalidate warranties.

Of course there is also the possibility that people are doing something that their employer or partner is unaware of. And a few cars seen have very evident company car or hire car auras - people with track driving in their soul would be unlikely to buy such things.

But mainly I think that we have far too many cameras of the speed/ANPR/CCTV type snapping away at us these days so it seems reasonable not to offer even more publically available pictures, especially when the people driving them have not been asked about their opinion about publication.

Information is personal you have to respect a persons wishes not to show it even if it's in the public domain

poah I’m sure you wouldn’t like me to post your full address (number 18 right?) nor you fergusd (number 95 I believe).

Both of your addresses are in the public domain and are easily found (for free) doesn’t make it right for me to post them though does it?

A number plate is in the public domain, it is a legal requirement to display it in a known format so everyone can see it, unlike your full address.

Its not

I found your address in exactly the same way as one would look up number plate

I took your website url and put it into a whois look up (think of them like the DVLA of the net) unless you pay them to remain anonyms, it will return; your name, address, plus a few other things

Now ask you self in you weren’t driving a punto but say a GT40 or F360 would you feel comfortable with someone giving the world to means to track you down??

so you agree that you don't want your home address posted on the web, but think that a license plate is "totally different"?

When you can write to the DVLA and get someone's home address FROM their license plate then surely that "difference" is irrelevant?
