If I could call on the collective wisdom.

I took this last Saturday:

I tried to use the rule of thirds ad I quite like the effect of the shadow and the sky blending into the wing, but it doesn't look much like the conditions. The sky was like this one:

I played about a bit with the White balance but did't get much.

I tried cropping the pic, but then the posts show up more.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd try a crop without burning out the highlights quite so much, then simply lose the posts:

Quick and dirty effort: replacing the sky with that from another image.

I like that.

Don't suppose you could put it on Bacalpse?

I think I actually cropped that from a different image to the one I posted above. All I did was crop it. The crop pic was with the white balance on sunny.

It can be done, but would look better with larger pictures to work with - Photoshop is your friend.

Suspect you took the original picture at or near midday which means the contrast in brightness between the sky and the lower half of the car body is too great for film or digital to cope with. If you take a series of photos at different exposures then they can be merged in Photoshop, but its not a technique for beginners ! Suggest next time you try taking a similar photo that you take it at a couple of hours before sunset.

By the way I like the positioning of the old and new cars in the second shot, thought that it looked a little blue though (another side-effect of a middle-of-the-day photograph because the colour of sunlight changes from blue in the middle of the day through to orange at sunset). Used Photoshop's mid-grey selector tool in Levels to pick a sample from the road (had to try 2 or 3 places before it was right) a little cropping and this is the result:

Thanks guys.

That's a nice effect with the colours on the 2nd pic.

They were taken near midday, during the footie. Have to say it was empty roads first, good light second.

This sort of thing just inspires me more to get Photoshop and give it
a try but it does seem to be very expensive is there any alternatives.

Great pics by the way.

Yes, great pics...

Photoshop isn't the only bit of kit. Also, especially when you're at the foot of the learning curve, Ye Olde Photoshoppe can be a terribly confusing world to live in.

If I was starting over, I'd probably start with Elements.....

....or become a student and get PS at educashional prices???

I've only got Photodraw, which seems really hard to get any results with. PS does seem to be the daddy.

I probably should pay more attention to taking better photos in the first place.

Oh and just out of interest, when everyone says to use RAW if you can, you can get a helluva lot of control over the image from a RAW conversion before you even touch PS...

Just done for effect really....

"the gimp" will do most of what photoshop does, including RAW file support, and it's free.

It's not as slick but you do get to spend the £400 on something else.
